My bad Bullwinkle,as I have stated before I'm easily confused some times. My response was aimed at Dakine and the bring enough money to return home post.No way meaning to be snarky.I enjoy everyone's posts here and also everyone's opinion. Some of the threads I find far more entertaining than TV.I do stand by my previous post.If it were easy to make it in Puna and not so hard to get to it would be L.A.By the way I've used the garbage bag trick since I was a kid. It's hot in there!

Remember to bring the means or a plan for how to secure all your stuff, either a shipping container with heavy lock, known, reliable and at-home neighbors (rare), a good alarm system, or very good home owners insurance that you don't mind making claims on. The unfortunate reality is, you simply must plan on establishing adequate security, or else you will be far from the first person to have his dreams disappear coming home to an emptied out lot. Sorry to sound like a wet blanket, but it's just something you must plan for.

I have a simple plan: it's called never leave the house.

Works great, except for the side effects...

Basically most posts I see from your post say most haole transplants are not happy here with Puna? think twice before being corrupted, it take's guts and determination and a heck of a lot of hard work. when they say this is a rock, it is true, you will know in a few years after being here
Good luck

The world already has descended upon Puna, and one look at the traffic will support this claim.

There was a time when we'd sit at the corner of 7 & F and drink beer, and not one vehicle would pass by for hours.

Can openers? I just bought the second to the last Swing-a-way ($10) from Hara store. The red handled one was the last one I saw for sale there. I swear by the Swing-a-way brand, and if that brand is unavailable, a P-38 will be my 2nd choice.

Rain gear? I still use my ECWCS without the liner, but most any microfiber material will do. Frogg Toggs are a good brand, but Hara sells them at an exorbitant markup. The rubbish bag trick is OK if you're not exerting yourself, but once you start working you'll end up soaking with sweat.
Better to use GoreTex.

Security? Family & friends are how I've always done it. I have one of my kids housesit when I have to travel, the bonus is that they love my dogs as much as I do, so I know they're in good hands.

Sports Authority still carry Frog Toggs but now it's vinyl so $10 going be exorbitant but didn't see the price.

I think colorful halloween costumes might be good idea in the driving rain-

Trickortreaters should be highly visible and at the other end of the age range i should be too.

D-9 - we used to rely on the SwingAway, & have a couple, but one we bought a couple of years ago was not the same as the older ones we had, which is why I posted the info above... Always use the p-38 for camping, but the folding nothing there convenience is not as needed in our kitchen, and the ol' Swing-Away & newer EZ-Duz-It work mo betta'

Other than material items like my temperpedic which would cost much more to replace than ship , I'll be bringing PATIENCE, a good attitude, an open mind, controlled expectations, a clear conscience, some liquid cash flow and knowing that I really know nothing.

I have this shiny thing that goes click, clack,BOOM. That and a gate should do the trick.
