Puna home invasion earns 10 year sentence

Oh yeah, forgot about a ladder that was stolen off my lot in Orchidland as well.

Nothing has ever been stolen from me here so there goes that theory.
I don't have dogs or guns and my house is usually unlocked.
Puna is a very, very safe place.

I agree. Having said what I said I also believe Puna is a very safe place by comparison with just about anyplace.

Kailua Oahu is worse for break ins.

And with the sentence handed down to the Pork and Beans bandits I think that will send a real message out to anyone contemplating an invasion that it's just not worth it.
One Thing I can always be sure of is that things will never go as expected.

If so, I will try to send out invite cards to you all, so you can attend the funeral and send flowers to anyone who invades my home Smile

IDK man…guns are good for protection and defense if your life is threatened, but in my book theft doesn't justify murder. Just look at the recent story where a man left his garage door open over night. He hears someone in the garage and goes and shoots them dead. Nobody will ever know if the dead man was a thief or just a considerate person going to shut the garage door because it was left open. I know that is a stretch but it is just stuff and things. Your material possessions do not justify taking another persons life. Stuff and things can be replaced and a thief can be rehabilitated. Jail time is good enough. I have had people take things from me but I never wished death upon them.

I mean would you rather be a murderer or a thief?

In most legal thought patterns, was it a "lesser or equal force used on the opponent to mitigate the situation"? Then charged accordingly.

Are you a human being, or a human doing?

Well written DB, I couldn't agree more. I am not materialistic enough to kill someone over belongings, I would think differently though if my family is threatened. This guy and his associates took it to the second part of that last sentence and has hurt others for life. They probably should have been shot once going in the home that was occupied. Because they were not, is why they deserve ten years minimum. The mastermind to this type of operation should continue to be sought out and watched close. I am a firm believer in, Once someone gets away with something wrong(LIKE RAPE, or stealing) they are more likely to repeat it or do something else wrong. This guy is saying all the right things to possibly have a reduced sentence, Yet he was caught and is not willing to help his community with this terrible mastermind so he is the example for the others who are stealing tonight JMO. P.S. We live in a very rural district with long response times from emergency personel So encouraging or having light sentences for acts that can have such deadly consequences should not be taken lightly or they can happen more frequently. I hope the woman and child who were there are recovering and can find peace again on the big isle.

I lived on a bad road for 30+ years and never got ripped off. Starting a few years ago, lots of new people moving over and building, demanding that the road be 'fixed'. The road was fixed, and 3 break-ins in 6 months, all while I was at work.

Yeah assault is a whole different story but still I think most of the time when people go on about using a gun it is uncalled for. A gun owner should have a relationship with their gun like a samurai or knight does with a sword. You gotta know that if you pull out a gun that might be the first reason you give for someone else to shoot you. Live by the gun, die by the gun. I think people get extra freaked about the idea of someone crawling in the window late at night but isn't that the least likely way you would get robbed?

You know I'm gonna stop there. I don't even like thinking about this stuff so. It's so stupid. It just feels like talking about it already gets that negative energy going and you start envisioning what you would do if that happened and that is the worst thing you can do. I've been mugged before most of the muggers are of weak character and handicapped by drugs and if you step to them they get surprised and take it down a notch. I have lived in New York, Boston, Chicago most of my life and have been in some sketchy situations. If you are the one who is all fearful and freaked out you are a target. I think the same goes anywhere. It's a law of attraction thing you attract the energy you put out. Even in the worst neighborhoods I have lived in the best thing to do is wave to your neighbors, talk story, look out for your neighbors, be seen and try to radiate basic respect for your fellow human beings and people don't see you as a target to be taken advantage of. Sure, realistically there are those wild card situations but I am not preparing for them that is a waste of my mental energy. I am preparing myself for love, aloha, respect, positive things.

"the pork and Bean bandit" --that is great. I thought it odd, too, that the accused is so sorry but won't reveal the third stooge. Knock on wood I have never felt unsafe here in Puna. Ever. Knock again

Any breaking and entering with someone home is a HOME INVASION, wether the criminal knows or not. That is a felony. Protecting your home is covered under the Castle Law. You only need to feel you or your family is in danger physically.

These are the laws.

You might want to go back and read the castle law as it applies to Hawaii. You obviously don't understand it.You can only shoot a person who is armed and threatening you or your family. If someone enters your house and is stealing your TV you can call 911 but you cannot shoot them. You can try to detain them until the police arrive but if point a gun at them you will be arrested.

If you have any chance of making it in Hawaii you need to understand that Hawaii is a very different place.

If George Zimmerman were in Hawaii when he shot Travon,he would be doing life in prison.
