Surprised?? Well lived here for 12 years and over that time have spent for two lots around $2500 in road fees so thereby expect some kind of road work, go figure. Also pay property taxes and expect some kind of county services in return although I suppose it all goes to schools and Hilo and "standard" subdivisons.

Note above where "free ride" is mentioned.
Basically, we all pay property tax, GET, fuel tax, and possibly even dues to our homeowners and/or road maintenance association, and services are provided in return for that money.
There's just no guarantee that the services will necessarily be useful, or even nearby...

What street do you live on? Unless you are on the highway (in which case you do not have to pay road fees) you must come up a paved road--so you got something for your fees. Fees are low, but if your road is real bad you can ask for free material to be dropped off--then you and your neighbors can fill pot holes.
Not that things could not be better, but I object when people claim no work has ever been done.

Yes there has been a lot of work done and I recognize it. I was refering to the post previous to mine which indicated that one should be surprised that there is any work.

There has to be constant work- or else the roads would revert to jungle within a years time. Look how much work it is just to "maintain" an acre or two of cleared land. The problem is not the fees, it's the freeloaders who think they are somehow exempt from paying them- which therefore- makes the ones paying have to pay more. If everyone paid there fare share- then the roads would be paved by now. IMO

Who said anything about pavement? What people want is maintenance - these are agricultural subdivisions (mostly) hence the gravel roads? Why move into ag zoned land and expect anything to be paved? Residential zoning would have a much more realisitic expectation for pavement - imo of course.

the roads are a shared problem. personally I am thankful that our contributions in HA are voluntary and I support any decision that favors the least able of our residents over the needs of corporate land owners and vacation retreats. To the person who would like to buy adjoining lots simply to prevent themselves from having neighbors, yes you should pay more. IMHO.

IDK, I think the idea of a private paved road is a money pit in more ways than one. Orchidland doesn't have enough people to even think about having them. I feel the idea of having any kine of county services almost funny. We are are pretty much on your own for everything.

Orchidland is growing like crazy! Everytime I drive in there, I see more bulldozed driveways.

- Hawaii schools are paid for by state taxes, not county property taxes. After 12 years, you should know this.
-The newest 'standard' subdivision above Hilo being advertised has lots starting at $175,000.00 - just for the lot. You get what you pay for. People who live in in some of the Hilo subdivisions pay more in property taxes in one year than than you have in road fees in 12. If you choose to buy in a 'sub-standard' subdivision, you don't get to grumble about the lack of standard services.
