help! Who to call when neighbors burn green wood?
#11
I recently read an article that detailed the successes of building code enforcement (I know, not a popular subject on Punaweb)and changes like building out of non combustible materials and requiring sprinklers etc have shifted the focus of fire departments from putting out fires to regulatory compliance and education.

That article reminded me of the 1953 Ray Bradbury book Fahrenheit 451 where he basically saw the final evolution of these concepts and envisioned a world where firefighters were no longer needed because buildings would no longer burn, so the job of firemen wasn't to put fires out, they set the fires, specifically they set fires to burn books.

That made me think, why did amazon call their reader the "Kindle" since that word means to set fire? Then that reminded me of the several instances in the press where amazon mass deleted books on Kindle owner's devices against their will and without their consent. Then I realized that we've already given away our freedoms to the book burners willingly, so I had to just stop thinking for awhile.

"so I had to just stop thinking for awhile."

Good idea. Don't believe everything you think.
Assume the best and ask questions.

I see what you did there terracore. Maybe it is within the purview of the fire department (in a rainforest) to police the pyro-inept - such as those that would burn green wood.

Or just wait until 3am and blast a marine horn. When they complain about the noise you can play let's make a deal...

I have an couple air horns and my neighbors know if they hear it it is an emergency. I recommend having one for that purpose only. Crying wolf can back fire.

silly people.... live and let live is a good policy, one night someone want's to have a fire in the country and you want to call 911? close your windows for the night and deal with it? there is cheap property in Arizona if you don't want to deal with people. we have trades and smoke goes everywhere, so what?

okay Steve - can I have a raging bonfire in your yard and fill your house with smoke tomorrow night? It's all well and good until it's affecting you and then I bet your tune changes!
