Pahoa Observations
#21
To me that doesn't matter. Even if the pahoa store was worse than napa, it's not bad enough to warrant another auto parts store.

An auto parts store and a recycle center, plus a new shopping center in the worst designed intersection/parking lots in the world.

The money is being spent on development, but morons are deciding how to spend it.

Well, to be fair to Napa, Orilley answers the same way ... I don't know and NO most of the time. At least Pahoa AutoPart guys "TRY". That's why I spend my money there. Not only that, but the Customer Service at napa sucks, Orilley is a little better but not by much. Dunno, I got a few friendly people at Napa once. Most of the time it just seems like unless your in there to spend 500 or more they don't want talk to you if you are just there to buy the 19 dollar filter and oil on special.

I'm always going into hilo anyway so, the time and gas it takes is a mute point. I'll spend my money even if it's a bit more on more knowledgeably / friendly staff. Plus a local company that is obviously not a chain. At least I get treated like a human and not some robot that obviously hates his/her job.

I buy a lot of auto parts. I find that automotive supply in hilo consistently beats napa prices on the more expensive items. for example on a rebuilt alternator 265.00 at napa 165.00 at automotive supply. new c/v axle 95.00 at napa, 65.00 at automotive supply. it pays to call around on the big ticket items.

I really like PAP and try to give the locals my business. That being said, ASC in Hilo is way cheaper for big ticket items and worth the trip.

Do we know for sure that C&C is going to be an Auto Parts store?

thanks for the tips. I gotta change out my rear wheel bearings and well, they only come assembled with the hub, so, gotta buy bearing and hub for rear. Napa wants 130 bucks a pop. I'll try the others ... see if I can save some $.

The only problem I've had with chain store auto parts is their employees lack of looking beyond the computer screen. I had an old Land Rover that needed a new carburetor. Chain store guy asked make/ model, nope we don't have it. Independent I went to said " let me look at that thing". Went to a book, flipped a couple of pages, set the carb down on a gasket outline and told me a Rochester carburetor off of a Chevy 250 six cylinder will work, have one this afternoon. That's service you gladly go back to.
As far as another auto parts store in Pahoa, I don't know what the "downtown" plan is, but do know the result will be "new" chain store type businesses, as the only independent stores you seem to see these days are t shirt shops and cigarette outlets, maybe a smoothie place. I would like to see a "food truck" type war ( competition) hosted by the town association with the winner getting reduced rent on a space to bring in quality mom and pop eating establishments, but that is just me. Additional quality mom and pop stores with good items are nice too, maybe a work clothing store, or small equipment sales/repair, without going to Hi Lo?

Part of this is simple "overhead" -- a corporate chain store has the deep pockets (and lawyers on payroll) necessary to comply with the County process, while smaller local vendors can run out of money before they're allowed to open.

Well then at least a small Ace hardware with basics and good sturdy work clothes would do. Or a nursery full of native plants and good soil.

There is already an Ace hardware next to Malama market.

Oops, been a while since I left. What I was getting at is that variety, not replication, is needed for Pahoa to be a viable village center. How about a postal/package/printing center with the ability to print oversize like blueprints, and FAX available instead of going to Hilo? I know there is a demand for that!
