#11
Iselle has already dropped down from Cat 4 to Cat 3 at 125 mph. And when it enters the central pacific today it will drop quickly to a tropical storm. The current forecast for Hilo and vicinity is:

Thursday
Overcast with thunderstorms in the afternoon.
High of 84F. Windy. Winds from the North at 15 to 45 mph shifting to the ENE in the afternoon.
Chance of rain 90% with rainfall amounts near 1.2 in. possible

Thursday Night:

Overcast with thunderstorms, then a chance of rain after midnight.
Low of 73F. Windy. Winds from the SSE at 15 to 45 mph.
Chance of rain 90% with rainfall amounts near 2.3 in. possible.

Partly Cloudy Friday

Was just at Malama Market, got there at 7am, by the time I left ten minutes later, the store was packed. Long's parking lot was pretty full, too.

Oh yeah, I don't buy bottled water, too expensive. Bought plastic 5 gallon jeep type gas cans and painted outside "blue" for water storage. Not going to worry about PBA if there is no clean water available, and only fill when I think I am going to need them.

It might go without saying, People who live in the fall path of albizia trees may want to hole up with some friends who don't. Especially if the wind speeds pick up or gust. Just to be safe.

We have a Berkey filter that is rated to purify funky stream water if necessary. Not that I plan to test that by not filling up containers, but it will for sure make the container water clean. It does filter very slowly. It makes the best tasting water I've had in Hawai'i out of the tap water. Good investment.

Calm before the storm...I have been washing EVERYTHING ( even the beach towels that live in the car & trucks...) I think the brain is going "hey it's sunny, don't know how long it will be sunny again, may as well do a load of wash!" also organizing the carport into "will this fly/blow away or not" those that might are going in the workroom...

My brother (who's a Matson captain) emailed me saying that they're thinking of closing the Port of Honolulu Thursday....which means he'll have to float around the island for 24 hours with his cargo until the storm passes.

Best thing to remember was Last Year, and the years before that where the LIKELY outcome will be NOTHING. Yes, have some fresh water, make sure you got at least half a tank of guess. BUT the REAL thing to do? KEEP a cool head and don't Panic or Freak out because the supermarket is out of bottled water or whatever. Just buy some one gallon jugs and fill em full of water. Heck, my fridge always has about 10 gallons of fresh water in it at all times. I also have 2 5 gallon jugs and one 10 gallon container that I'll probably be filling up (just in case). Got enough canned goods and foods / rice to last 2-3 months if need be.

Remember don't freak out or panic. It's just a hurricane of many. I've been through many many many of them. Worst one was in 92... Living in Waianae at the time. Took almost a month for power to return. I heard they ran out of transformers as all the poles going down Kam Highway were down and damaged. Makes me wonder how many poles and transformers HELCO has in storage for the big island. Main thing relax, slow down, and try to enjoy the day!
