Rush to put in roads
#21
Railroad/ Beach was always a poor choice. Now that they have invested money in them they may become a first choice.

Not having the access IS the trade off (in part). Seems like you rolled the dice and might have lost.

I think the road should have been built decades ago. But better now than never, no use crying over spilled milk, why bother pointing fingers, just build the damn road already.

They are coming out on 19th. and I think 19th is a 70ft wide right of way. so if there is a lower puna left after this, it's going to be hard to argue not to use it.

Rob, can you remind us where the best choice route lay? Was it going through a different part of HPP using eminent domain? (I've forgotten the details.) I understand the issues with Beach Road.

I wish Shipman would stop putting a big "thou shalt not pass" block between the ocean and the highway.

My proposal from those years ago can be downloaded here:

If I was to change it now I would only rename it as:

Paradise Parkway Proposal

That proposal is excellent.

Very nice and good idea Rob. Ever work for a planning department? You seem to have a knack for putting a proposal together nicely. Thanks for sharing. Too bad the Shipmans can't work on a proposal such as this, as you do propose a rock wall along their frontage.

The cutting lots in half idea is the most destructive of the bunch.and will meet with the most resistance.

There's an interesting, albeit extremely dry, book, I think it was called "The Shipmans of East Hawaii" which is well worth plowing through.. and it's a slog!

The takeaway from that book for me was that they are a very conservative organization, that has been playing their hand with the long term (hundreds of years) in mind, not so much the short. In other words they'll be way happy to have that road go through once it's in their financial interest to do so.
