Highway patrol in Puna?
#61
Tom, It is my pleasure to answer your questions. I have committed throughout my career to openly, honestly, and bluntly answering anyone’s questions about law enforcement. I believe that without this type of discourse people feel too separated from their police service. And, since I have had two careers in my life, a law enforcement career, and a technical career in the civilian world, I feel that I have a good grasp on how the grass looks from each side of the fence.

So if anyone ever has any questions, feel free to ask.

Gypsy69 I am still enjoying the fantasy of having 10-12 cops on duty at any hour here in Puna much less the wee hours of the night. I've been told by more than one officer that two, three at most are ever on duty to cover the area from Pahoa to Volcano. Ten to twelve would just be a dream to most law abiding citizens. I seldom drive home after 8pm (partially because that is dangerously close to my bedtime) but mostly because of the drunk/stoned drivers! Easily 9 out of every 10 trips from Hilo up the hill to Eden Roc have at least one or two individuals who have no business behind the wheel. Sadly tragedy isn't just after dark, I've seen people driving in the middle of the day who are so ucketh fuped, I bet they don't even know their own names![V]

When I hear on the local news and read in the paper that HPD will be enforcing click it or ticket to generate revenue. Well that pretty much says it all. It is not protect and serve. I have long time friends in HPD.they don't call quotes anymore. Generate revenue. Thier just doing their job and following orders.

Quotas, revenue, whatever. We all know the rules and the consequences. You make your choices and you take your chances. No grumble eh?

Maybe it's both?

Seat belts save lives. The Click it or Ticket campaign generates revenue, AND gets drivers to buckle up. It's pretty easy to not give money to the police department, wear your seat belt. It takes two seconds.
