Alleged voter fraud follow up
#91
I heard the ad on KAPA radio this morning. I'm pretty sure she said home, she definitely said business. But just to keep things from spinning out of control here, until I hear the ad again and can confirm she said "home", let's not make a deal about her residence being part of the ad.

How does one access financial disclosures?

Campaign spending reports are complicated to find as well.

Just wondering.

I won't, promise. And no big deal if it turns out it wasn't in the ad. It doesn't make sense that it would be.

PauHana, I don't know about finding the campaign spending report.

The financial disclosure is at the Elections Office, which is where they keep the voter reg affidavits. They will let you look at it but won't copy it for you as they will the affidavits. (They redact social security numbers and other private info.)

The financials are in a binder they have for everyone.
(Elections Office is at County Building where Mayor's office is, downstairs and to the right as you enter the atrium area.)

The candidates list their sources of income, separated by spouse, their real estate values and mortgages, their vehicles, and their consumer debt (includes vehicle loans I think). Probabaly stocks and so forth; I didn't pay attention. I only looked briefly and noted that the Hilo house rental income was mentioned but not separated out from Big Island Chronicle income.

I was surprised to see consumer debt that was far more than the annual combined gross income.

There has been a lot of talk leading up to this cycle about Tiffany running in 2016, so I was surprised she jumped the plan up by a couple years, when the kids are still so young. I figure she needs the money.

Looks like Tiffany has an illegal campaign contribution she isn't self reporting, $3000 from Harry Samelson, maximum allowed is $2000.

Tiffany isn't good for government. She says she was a reporter but she is extremely careless with semantics and definitions, as well as spelling, so there is enough indication why she was let go, although Stephen's Media is a POS. The lawsuit-crazy thing is really weird. The whole blog thing is dying out, so it isn't going to be journalism. Unfortunately, Facebook is now the newspeak journalism. Onward to Idiocracy.

Unfortunately, probably all the Punatic politicos, those few that want to go after council, state representative and senate positions are all dirty to some respect. Just goes with the territory. The sad outcome of this is they claim to represent Puna Democrats, which kind of explains why Puna is the bastard stepchild in the state halls.

I don't think you're reading it right teddy boy. Her total for all contributors is only $3200 and change. The format is kind of ambiguous. I think most of the donations reported on the document were for things other than cash; materials, tees, etc. No harm, no foul. Your inaccurate assessment hasn't cost her any votes on the Punaweb Court of Public opinion.

It's still about 12-4 against.

BTW, I am not Ken; I am snorkle, An entity so influential they named an underwater breathing device after me. I am embarrassed to admit that the early versions had ping pong balls in them. But I digress.........

The way I read the report could be incorrect, and I welcome correction if so. I agree it is less than clear, but here's my take:

This report is for the period between the Primary and the General. The top line in the Amount column is for donations during this period. The "aggregate" line is for the total of all donations during the two year period. $2000 is the aggregate limit during a two year period for Hawai'i County Council.

Samelson had already donated $2K prior to the primary, which makes this 1K post-primary donation an illegal contribution that takes the aggregate to 3K.

The Total figure at the bottom is for the post primary period, not for the entire campaign period, which is why it is so small.

It doesn't matter whether the donation is cash or value in goods. Otherwise contributors could convert their money into promotional materials and donate those to get around the limits.

Leilanidude, what say you? You're the one who originally raised concerns about campaign financing.

What I wonder is how she does the accounting for all her legal services, billable hours with her attorney. Legal expenses for her business and legal expenses for the fraud investigation. The fraud investigation is not a campaign expense or a business expense, but I believe she has posted about trading BIC advertisement space for legal services.

Snorkle, agree -- you are snorkle, whoever that may be.

Actually, I heard from a friend of a non-friend that he is looking into running for Mayor in 2016.

Another friend of a non-friend told me that he is vastly wealthy.

And yet even another friend of a non-friend told me he has significant connections with a bunch of heavy hitting politicians – both right here in Hilo – to Honolulu – and even to Washington DC! And in BOTH Democrat and Republican parties!

Then I suggest "Ken" reigns in his sock puppets and figures out how to avoid the clumsy sentence structure that gives his socks away every time. Then again, maybe the island having an internet kook as mayor will certainly change the politics of the island.
