I've had a bad experience with the staff at the Pahoa Natch myself. I actually liked the store and especially appreciated the acrylic feed bins they have against the wall. Those bins are a little low to the ground though, and are difficult to use without getting down on the floor. Difficult at my age.
I was snacking on some trail mix out of a bin recently and found myself with my head stuck fast in the plastic container. When the staff and the Fire Department extricated me, I suspect they used a GMO corn based oil as a lubricant instead of the organic coconut oil that I would have preferred.
If that weren't bad enough, the tattooed and pierced assistant Manager, instead of exuding a little empathy to me, acted like I was some sort of criminal.
If I hadn't been permanently banned from that store, I assure you I would never set foot in there again.
Rant over.

About 3 months ago,my husband and myself who are in our 90s went to the natch in pahoa.
When we were checking out,the woman insisted we show ID to confirm indeed we were senior citizens for senior citizen discount .
Ok not a problem really, wrinkles and with a walker and cane,so i showed my ID as i was paying and not husband. Then the wahine informed us that because we do not have a card to get some sort of reward,we could not get the senior discount.
But should we be willing to get their reward card,we were entitled to the senior discount,we asked for a manager to discuss this and none were in store. So we asked the cashier to call Kai since we know him from surfing and also his father. She said NO,can NOT call Kai,then we asked if this was ok with the owner, she said none of our business.Either sign up for reward card to or just pay and leave.
Which we did. We paid and left.No discount.
Very disrespectful to the elders.
In addition they need to have some one serve the hot foods,as all sorts of yuppy hippy types help them selves to the hot tray with filthy hands and fingers.
We are quite amazed that the health department has passed them with a GREEN pass of clean and excellent.
Luckily we love have option of going hilo once a week to their hilo store were it is spotless clean and happy employee's.
We are also happy to shop at Abundant Price ( Life ) as the have better choices in veg and the grains we enjoy.
But pahoa natch is really a dump.
Russle are you listening ?
Your store in pahoa needs a giant enema and repaint along with select staff that need retraining in customer service OR termination.
Tall Lauri needs a raise, she is best employee you have in that store bar none.

I hate Island Naturals, tho, I'd probably love it if I were single and getting 320 a month. You could buy all the finest fruits and afford to pay the outrageous prices for them. Does anyone on any type of budget really shop there?
The place is laughable expensive. I went there once or twice just to see what they wanted or a small can of some strange drink, like 5 bucks a bottle for this or that. It would be rather fun to go if the government was giving me 350 bucks to go experiment with exotic foods... But, I dunno I guess I feel kinda ashamed and would rather not go on assistance unless I really....REALLY had to. Even if I were wealthy I wouldn't shop at that place.
Island Naturals is a joke, a sad expensive joke for Puna. I'm with Ted, I'd rather shop at 7/11.

I guess they don't sell hawaiian Papaya... Lucky for me I have about 20 of them growing, strawberry in my yard. Free! Even if they are GMO, it doesn't bother me. I'll eat pretty much 'anything GMO' except HFC (fake sugar) no thanks.

Mimosa - my comment was rather tongue-in-cheek! Apologies for any confusion.

So, I spoke with the manager and was told that cashiers do bag your groceries but customers have the option to bag it themselves.
My main issues was with the rude service that I received. Mimosa, I understand the frustration you went through. I had my three sons with me at the time all under 5 years and ready for a nap, I had my hands full and the cashier couldn't take time to pack my grocery. She said that it was not her job and management said it was more efficient for customers to pack their bags, which was a lie.
The store has many good items and I shop there twice a month for my Ghee, many curry spices, Dried beans, and rice but it does need improvement in providing reliable service.
Question: Other than Island Naturals, does anyone now of another store that sells Ghee, dries spices "curry, turmeric, cloves, cardamom, dried beans and not McCormick brand.
Humanity is not what you can get out of others but what you an give to others.
