Super Bowl (Hawaii related)
#21
TomK, if the soccer players over there want to throw on some pads and hit like men.

Ray Lewis: "football is about gettin hit, that's it."

I do love our Puna AYSO though, it's a fun game for my daughter. She has been playing since age 4 and now at almost 7
she is really skilled now.

TomK-
Sadly there were no wickets scored in the game yesterday, which occurs on an attempt to kick the ball through the upright stumps (goal posts), hit a post, and still go through the uprights. This is one of the few times in the game of American football when a player actually uses his feet to contact the ball, so it's pretty easy to miss. Should a wicket be scored, then and only then is a team allowed to qualify for the Champion's League.

These rules, which combine cricket, football, and the other football were enacted by a secret international sports cabal some years ago... but I can say no more as it happened outside of Hawaii.

My cousin Ronnie was a wide receiver and kick returner for the Seattle Seahawks for 5 years #81 and also for the Patriots for 2 years #81 and also played in Super Bowl 33 for the Falcons #82. It was fun seeing his old teams playing against each other for the championship.

Ah, thanks HOTPE, your explanation makes it all clear now. So when Russell Wilson tried to bowl a googly with 20 seconds to go, perhaps he thought if the delivery was successful they might qualify for the Europa League. Incidentally, I heard that Katy Perry's performance was quite stunning while the players had gone off for lunch.

TomK -
I couldn't have said it better myself.
That final play by Russel Wilson was definitely googly.

True Southernmost. However the superbowl comes the year after the season. So Raiders are the '76 '80 and 83 NFL champions but the bowls were played in '77, '81 and 1884. Just like the Patriots are the 2014 NFL season champions. Seems funny but that's just the way the NFL announces it. I wish Hawaii could have a pro football team. Traveling to games would be a bi*ch for them though.

Now I know you may not have been telling me the whole truth. Googly is a cricketing noun, not a verb, so I think you are now on a dodgy wicket. Still, I thought the Seahawks were going to win when play was stopped for the third tea break. At least it wasn't like last year's Super Bowl where I thought Denver were going to be asked to follow on.

Did not disappoint one bit, great game between two very well coached football teams. Really though it felt like most of it was very predictable and made for television, as in very good entertainment. Very surprising catch yet again against the Patriots but even more surprising was the worst play call in the history of the Superbowl era. Maybe some truth behind some of the rumors surrounding who was to be MVP Lynch and his multi millions he's going to demand or Wilson?

Anyway when a call looks that bad on a stage that big somebody is usually going to be talking to his lunch bucket very soon, NFL stands for, not for long. Looked as if the head coach of the seahawks changed his mind and call on the sidelines just before he gave that game to the Kraft family. Maybe Pete will get another chance to coach the Pats again after all.

How come so many of those 4.5 million dollar 30 second commercials are so misleading from what they are truly trying to sell us? Budweiser had me fooled more than once, and I never could figure out what some of the half naked ladies were trying to sell. The one that had us following what looked like an old mans Viagra pill out the window and into a car that swelled up with muscles, then had all the ladies noticing was genius, or just a Lexus.

Could Hawaii ever have such a stadium like the one the cowboy owner Jerry Jones helped build in Dallas? Sports and television are here to stay and it is a shame Hawaii couldn't be part of it more in the future. Those large stadiums can host much more than just a game of football or baseball, they are roomy for things like hula championships, musical concerts, motorcycle and car races, extreme sports like skateboarding, world conventions, really the possibilities are endless with a new age stadium like that. I know it would never work cause Hawaii does not have the population to fill them, but then who would have thought folks would like the desert of las Vegas as long, or as much, as they have? The added jobs, entertainment, or tourism added profits could be used by the state to help pay for its rail.
P.S. Anyone know how much a stadium like that one in Cowboy land cost to build and maintain?

How much is the railroad on Oahu going to cost once completed, and how much to maintain?

This one deserves its own thread, along with the question "how do we get one".

It was supposed to cost about $5B, with Hawaii's share paid by the extra half-cent GET that currently applies only to Oahu. With the "massive overruns" (read: lawsuits + the costs going up while everything waits for said lawsuits) there is some "need" to extend that extra half-cent beyond its current sunset date in 2022.

I assume that some operating cost predictions exist; I further assume that these are inaccurate, even if this is merely "out-of-date".

Rail has a heritage that is very similar to the vast "private" subdivisions in Puna: both were created as a giant tax-mining operation, not intended for practical use -- if the rail project were "useful", it would go to Waikiki, and the airport, and it would pass through the dense student housing. Instead, it runs through vast State-owned "agricultural" lands, in hopes that these can be developed around the shiny new rail system.

This last part is patently offensive: reliance on imported food is a huge problem, so let's turn the farmlands into condos, then import more energy to run the rail system... of course, the rail will be "green" because it uses Maui wind farms and Big Island geothermal connected to Oahu with a massive undersea interisland electric grid that costs 3-5x the original $5B rail budget -- maintenance costs are even less clear for that part, not to mention who will pay for the construction.

Meanwhile, the Big Island can't find a few $M for decent roads...
