Let me get this right, jrw, and in English.
You came across a blind bend whilst driving and was surprised to find cyclists in the road. No matter if there might have been some other obstruction.
You then went into the other lane to avoid the obstruction and you feel fortunate that no one was driving in the other direction.
Now, if someone HAD been driving the opposite way in the other lane, who do you think would be responsible for the head-on collision?
Let me give you a clue. It wouldn't be the cyclists or the other driver.

Talking out your backside once again dude. I have logged more hours in the saddle than you have on your keyboard. Blaming the dead guy is a real classy move and you are still an asshat!

It is about maintaining control of your machine. Did you really just admit that you go barreling around blind downhill curves with no ability to arrest your descent?

According to various news reports this man was a long time avid cyclist, who had worked hard in his community for over 25 years to promote safe bicycling for recreation and transportation, including starting a bicycle festival and working to get safe bike lanes and bike paths in his community. From my experience these are NOT the type of cyclist who rides carelessly without a light or reflector, or with ear buds in.
Somebody who is still riding a bike at 63 didn't get there by being stupid about those things.

"Asshat number two - Welcome to the discussion!"
i second that unfortunate greeting. and do we now have a third candidate knocking on the door as well?
Frank randomly conjectures out of the blue: "anyone confirm if the rider was wearing ear buds or head phones? i see lots ah folks walking, riding, running, and driving wearing these things...no bueno dudes!!!!"
uhhh, what is it with this tendency to imply some sort of blame on the part of this deceased bicyclist with absolutely no information whatsoever at this point to remotely suggest as much. without any such info to go on it's rather bizarre considering it's quite clear that, if anything, by default the operators of motor vehicles are basically responsible to avoid pedestrians and bicyclists, not the other way around.
at this point we could randomly speculate any hypothetical to suggest blame where we might choose according to our bias. was the bicyclist intoxicated? was the officer drunk? was the bicyclist performing dangerous tricks at the time? was the officer distracted by a personal call on his mobile device? did a mongoose dart into the road creating a chain reaction?
