Which store has the best food prices?
#11
The selection is limited but the guy selling produce on Saturdays in Ainaloa is probably the best fresh produce deal. One dollar for a big bunch of produce. Walmart has great prices on staples however they are frequently out of things. Their pet food prices are comparable to target.

I'm a believer in "buy local' but sometimes these deals are too good to pass up;

The quantities are large but for instance I bought 15 5 oz. bags of Kettle Sea Salt chips for $18 or a $1.20 a bag. The large quantities allows me to donate to our food drive. And every purchase creates a .5% donation to Project Hawaii a local charity. We don't have Amazon Prime but there's free and fast shipping to Hawaii if you spend $35. This was one of the reasons we didn't sweat the possible dock strike.

There's also Safeway's "Just for you"

I find the Target/Safeway combo is pretty easy to do.

When Pahoa Longs closed we went to Keaau Foodland to continue our food drive they turned us down so I will never shop there. I think they have some of the highest prices anyway.

Wow. Even though I know just about everything there is more expensive I assumed (ok, ok, I hoped) the local coffee would be less. There goes my estimated monthly food budget! Gotta have my coffee... [Big Grin]

I'm finding that Walmart isn't the bargain it use to be anymore for foodstuff. Target seems to have the lower prices on most stuff plus it has a produce and meat section. I've also noticed that the Target parking lot is getting to be like Walmart's and the amount of people in the store has increased dramatically.

Walmart makes me tired. is it the lighting? the aisle arrangement? something about it has made me rather dread going there ..can't quite put my finger on it. and i don't think it's just bias, probably bad design somehow. feel like cattle.

Watch Safeway, they charged me 5.15% tax one day.( $1.16 on $ 22.00 apx). I went back several days later and it was 4% . Odd!

FYI
Foodland in Keaau now has Don Q Rum which is the best rum in Puerto Rico I have never seen it outside Puerto Rico before. The one with coconut infusion makes a fabulous pina colada. (coconut milk, pineapple juice and the infused rum)

For me it's the filth...no matter which city/state I'm in it's always been filthy. I'm not one of those 'I refuse to shop there snobs', but I do try to touch as little as possible while I'm in there!
