I'm with Kaimana on this one.

For a long, long time this was a community that treated one another with respect. People invited all fellow Punawebbers to their homes for PW parties, and got together for dive/snorkeling Sundays at Richardson's. When one of our own got seriously ill people stepped up and helped. Damon over posting and Pohaku/Peter going of on truly bizarre diatribes was as bad as it got.

Then a few trolls moved under the bridge, leading newcomers to think PW was just like every other forum on the internet, and it has gone steadily downhill ever since. The people who treat PW like "just a message board" are the problem, they came into a community that wasn't "just a message board" and dragged it down to the same trashy level as the comments section on the CNN website. Some social theorists would say that that is an inevitable process, that forums will always become cesspools eventually, but the posters here did an excellent job of restraining themselves for a very long time.

I'm actually impressed with this thread. So far it's had almost no derailment with off topic nonsense.

Ditto

Though I would like to add that I would greatly appreciate it if Rob were to see the wisdom in being a little bit more aggressive as a moderator for a little while. You have a graceful way of nudging things when you wish to Rob, and I believe we'd all benefited from it.

When I first started reading Punaweb years ago, it seems like it was full of people trying to give information and help to each other. (The Patron Saint was Pam Lamont of course, no relation). Now it seems like it is so much recriminations and paranoia. Granted there is a lot of that out there in the world. It would be nice if Rob found a way to filter or segregate it. You can wish, can't you.

To be fair... What you guys are asking for, is 24 hour babysitter, that is a lot dedication and motivation for a moderator. I think Rob has better things to do with his time. Oh well, just my two cents worth. What is needed is a solution. Anyone else have any good idea's?

I recall sometime ago there was a PW member that went overboard saying things about other members.
The Dude went Mental. Even drawing vile cartoons of members and posting links to them.
I was so disgusted that I stopped reading and posting on PW. And for months I stayed away because the irk factor just rubbed me the wrong way.

But after a while I realized that I was missing out on possibly some vital Puna related knowledge and returned to find this person was gone. Or at least wasn't posting his rants anymore.

But what kind of PW did I return to?

A kinder gentler machine gun hand.

I Lack to remember his name.
One Thing I can always be sure of is that things will never go as expected.

As per pohaku, I learned something new from him everyday and was sorry to see him go before we got to cruise around.

Still waiting for my invite Bananahead.

Thank you, Carey.
And thank you, Rob, for providing us this service. This forum was invaluable to me during last year's lava flow threat.
