Rescue on the cliffs in HPP
#21
Around 10 AM this morning (Monday) 2 divers were back in the ocean. The coast guard boat nearby following and the helicopter concentrating along the coast nearest C & L, and then hovering near the boat. The ocean didn't seem nearly as treacherous today for the divers.

I asked a man who was unloading some items from his pickup truck if he was family. He said he was the son. He said his dad and a 7 yr old (his daughter, his dad's daughter?) were together fishing on Saturday. I gave him my condolences. Other family members are sitting and waiting patiently at the cliffs.... [Sad]

Absolutely tragic, I don't know how I would cope if I saw a family member lose their life this way feeling so helpless. From what I saw and heard, the emergency services did everything they could.

As for flotation and other safety devices, I agree with the sentiment, but let's not give the county council ideas. Next thing we know it'll be illegal to fish or walk on the cliffs without appropriate safety gear.

This situation has "shoulda, coulda" written all over it. Condolences to the family. I lost a family member to the ocean- it is a sudden, tragic event for all involved.

Most fishermen, including myself will always have rope and flotation device nearby....be it a cool, a sealed 5 gallon bucket, etc. Especially when fishing the cliffs of Puna, Ka'u, Hamakua, Hilo....kings landing especially.

Fishermen lost seldom take such precautions. Again, the surf was big that day and numerous civil defense warnings. Why in the world would he go fishing? And even more disturbing is the possibility that a 7 year old girl witnessed the whole thing. I hope this is not true.

It is. I got the info first hand. I didn't ask for further info as it would've been inappropriate.

The family is out there again today...

He died doing what he loved to do.

I wish for as much for myself when the time comes.

My condolences to his family.

I was just down on the hpp coast and saw the search and rescue copter lower a basket to a boat about 200 feet off the coast and then again lower the basket on beach road. So they may have found him.

For any fisherman out there, there are personal flotation devices that are small and easy to wear. Here is one that just looks like a belt: http://www.rei.com/product/881147/nrs-ze...8811470001&mr:trackingCode=76E3AF4A-C5B8-E411-8F84-BC305BF82162&mr:referralID=NA&mr:device=c&mr:adType=plaonline&mr:ad=86749108720&mr:keyword=&mr:match=&mr:tid=kwd-70914590920&mr:ploc=9032813&mr:iloc=&mr:store=&mr:filter=70914590920&lsft=cm_mmc:cse_PLA
