A lot has changed, sounds like you haven't been in old town at night in a long time. With the Kamehameha repaving done plus sidewalks and street lights, the stretch from Ken's to the Wailuku is much less scary. The soup kitchen mission has moved out and that has really cleaned up old town. More people are trying to make a go of small businesses, so there aren't as many vacant street level dark spots. The cops seem to be moving the homeless/bums along. Hilo tends to have less of a chronic homeless/bum problem because it rains so much. Don't know where they go but heading into cold, wet winter, sleeping on the ground doesn't work. This last First Friday/Black and White was a big party at night. There is also a lot more aloha in Hilo than Puna. The level of the tourists is much higher scale than the freeloaders that head down to Puna to go totally off-hook.

I recently took a reading for both Hilo and Pahoa with my Alohameter*, calibrated to the Hawaiian derived system which measures from the back and not the face over a scale of 1-10.

Hilo had an average of 8.9 Aloha units, whereas Pahoa was slightly lower at 8.6. Given the margin of error in the sample is .4, and factors such as crowd size and time of night weigh into the reading, we can conclude that Hilo and Pahoa both have "a lot more Aloha."

BTW, the highest reading? The mosquito spray isle at KTA Puainako. Everyone is so delighted they've finally found a can of Off! in stock, they're super friendly and want to chat about everything like whether they should get Deep Woods (do you think 25% DEET is enough?) or maybe a can of the Sweat Resistant formulation (is it really better for yard work?), and all the things they're done so far around their home and business to prevent dengue fever. 10.0 Aloha!**

** Please note, this Aloha epicenter is located in Hilo, so may have resulted in some bias in the higher reading for Hilo as there was no corresponding area to test in Pahoa.
