My daughter graduated from Kea'au High School two years ago and while she was a student there she told me, "My school caters to the stupid and the angry. There aren't any resources left over for the smart kids." She was in a calculus "class" that consisted of her and two other students watching a calculus class on Maui via Skype. The Maui teacher didn't consider them her 'real' students and made no effort to teach them other than turning on Skype. Our daughter had to continue her calculus education on her own by watching videos on youtube. I joked about making a bumper sticker: "Hawaii public schools: Almost as good as youtube." At least you can't get beat up by youtube.

An exception requires the consent of both the losing and gaining principals. The Kea'au principal refused our request to enroll her in Hilo. At the time the school was on probation (it may still be, I don't know) for not puking out students with high enough test scores, he probably needed as many Lisa Simpsons as he could get. Because at the time we had two properties, we were in both the Pahoa and Kea'au high school boundaries and we picked what our research concluded was the lesser of two evils.

In the end, it was all a blessing in disguise. An amusing anecdote was when we put her into Hawaii public schools as a transfer from Alaska, they originally wanted to put her into "basic math", even though she had previously received in A in pre-calc. Our daughter went into the principal's office and told him, "I am NOT going to take basic math. I could TEACH basic math" which is one of the reasons why the Maui skype thing was setup. Ironically, the next year she was teaching basic math through the school's student tutoring program. She completed all the senior classes in her sophomore year and got waivers that allowed her to take college courses at the community college the second half of her junior year at our expense, and then they graduated her a year early as valedictorian. The whole thing led to a good scholarship at Manoa that probably wouldn't have happened if we stayed in Alaska.

Wow, that is a great story .. I've heard similar from the teachers ... They love having the smart kids there to keep averages up.

Hope she can dovetail into something good right here.

They arrested 5 kids yesterday according to the Trib.

I don't understand the Sergeant's statement

"There have been unconfirmed reports that videos of some of the fights have been posted on social media.

“I heard that there are, but I personally haven’t seen any yet,” Konanui said regarding the videos."

I was easily able to find dozens of Youtube videos and they even have names.

Correction:
Teachers love having smart kids because they make teaching a worthwhile, administrators love having smart kids there to keep averages up. For administrators it is all about the numbers, not individual kids' needs, most teachers my kids had in multiple school districts really cared about the needs of the individual, more than the test scores or averages, the administrators everywhere pretty much just care about the numbers.

administrators everywhere pretty much just care about the numbers.

Especially their own; administrators typically outnumber the teachers and maintenance staff...
