It seems to me the entire problem with road construction's impact on commuting would be eliminated if the road work was done in the night and before dawn the workers left the roads in a functional form for the daily traffic. And, I don't think it needs to cost more. On one hand it eliminates a lot of the traffic officers needed and the other it allows for smoother more timely construction. All that would have to happen to make it so would be for the state/county to include the requirement in their call for bids and the worker's unions not to be obstructionist. Other places have done this for years, decades, so any humbug about it being hard is just noise methinks.

I am under the impression that the HDOT has designed an intentional failure so they will have it as an impediment to future roundabouts in the state. The inconvenience is likely intentional too since Hawaii government is predicated on a reward your friends and punish your enemies philosophy.

Making it painfully obvious that our local representation is impotent when it comes to these issues and that Honolulu is still in charge. Jokes on them though because once Oahu is one big parking lot they will start to move here and wonder who built such substandard roads.

Notice how the ponding water downhill of the Kea'au transfer station is not mentioned anymore? Until someone hydroplanes into oncoming traffic...

In a rational environment, this might happen, but not here. Anything that inconveniences the union workers who prop up the state political regime will be torpedoed, no matter how many thousands of citizens are inconvenienced vs. the few dozen employees who do the work.

There may also be a "screw you Pahoa hippies" attitude in there too, we all know what the Hilo folk think of Pahoa and how they ASSumer we are all hippies.
Whatever the reason, the traffic back up is not acceptable. I suggest everyone calls our politicians and let them know how inept and disrespetful it is.
