Media Release

Detectives have arrested a 34-year-old man for the murder of an unidentified man whose badly decomposed body was found over the weekend in the Hawaiian Paradise Park subdivision in Puna.

An autopsy conducted on the unidentified human remains ruled the death as a homicide.

The medical examiner concluded that the body was that of an adult male and that he expired due to gunshot wounds.

Detectives from the Area I Criminal Investigations Section are seeking dental records and are working with a forensic odontologist to confirm the victim’s identity.

At 2:35 p.m. Tuesday (January 26), detectives executed a search warrant at a home on East Palai Street in Hilo and arrested 34-year-old Eric James Fontes Jr, who has no permanent address, for an outstanding warrant for failure to appear.

At 4 p.m. Tuesday, Fontes was arrested and being held on suspicion of second-degree murder, three counts of first-degree terroristic threatening, second-degree theft, ownership/possession prohibited, and use of a firearm in the commission of a separate felony.

He remains at the cellblock while detectives continue the investigation.

Who knows what the story will turn out to be.

That is kind of creepy, eigoya. Take care out there.

I wonder if this:

http://www.bigislandvideonews.com/2016/0...d-in-puna/
"A 34-year-old man was arrested for murder on Tuesday afternoon in Hilo, following Saturday’s discovery of human remains in the area of Beach Road off Maku#699;u Drive in Puna’s Hawaiian Paradise Park subdivision... ...The medical examiner concluded that the body was that of an adult male and that he expired due to gunshot wounds."

Is connected to Tom's observation:

http://www.punaweb.org/Forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=21892
"Five shots about ten minutes ago. Several calls to the police. Kaloli / Beach Road area in HPP. Lots of shouting afterwards. Don't think this was a pig hunter."

There is no indication from the information available that the fatal gunshots occurred at the location where the decedent was found. Additionally, 9 days in a our climate is more than enough to cause a clothed body to deteriorate sufficiently enough to be described as 'badly decomposed.'

eigoya, since you cycle past there so frequently, do you recognize the spot:

I know that area well and I was at that intersection on New Years Eve so I am curious to know exactly where it is.
I suspect it's quite a ways down the road towards Hawaiian Beaches and Makuu just happens to be the closest intersection.

I rode my bike thru there on the weekend and saw six HPD vehicles parked in a driveway on the makai side about 1.5 miles south of HPP. Two officers were standing in the road and checked me out real good as I went by.

Keen detective work in progress. They were determining if you were more likely to attach the body to the handlebars, or to the frame.

Thanks rocketman. So it wasn't in HPP at all.

There are things getting jumbled. The body was dumped in HPP and it wasn't near Beach road. The missing guy is associated with a house on Beach road. They haven't confirmed if the missing guy is the body but catching the suspect seems to indicate it is the missing guy. Then, there is the mailbox robbery, further west up HPP. That guy is still on the run and he might have run across the road to Ainaloa or Orchidland, so cops will be around that area. It would be a full time job to keep up with all the guys on the run, does seem like more agitated people snapping suddenly.

The exact opposite is actually the case:
The body was left off of Beach Road about 1 1/2 miles from Maku'u Drive, Pahoa direction from HPP.
The missing man's house is not on Beach Road, but somewhere else in HPP.

It is the guy and the body was decomposed because it was dismembered and dropped off in several HPP locations, accounting for the multiple locations. Leave it up to HPP to come up with the zingers. They still haven't confirmed where the guy got killed but that could have been the Beaches location. There does seem to be some kind of gang war going on with the hispanic locals.
