Signed up for Oceanic Time Warner internet on line this morning. They took my credit card info and scheduled a time for them to come out and install. I got real excited thinking that maybe they are in my area. Just got a phone call this afternoon saying.. Sorry...we're not in that area in HPP. I told them that I applied for cable 25 years ago when they were installing on 24 avenue and they told me that they would hold my application and call me when they got to my area. Well 25 years later they still are not in my area (closer.... on Makuu and 5th) but not down the road on 5th. They said they will call me when they are in my area. I told them that I might be dead by then.

I don't understand, are they providing cable to 5th St (near Makuu) or not? Just parts of 5th St?

Aloha Broadband has been a mess for about 2 weeks. Intermittent problems all day long. My neighbor called and told them there's 4 of us right next to each other w/ issues. They told him they're bringing in new equipment to fix within next two weeks. So they are aware of it. Normally, their down speeds top at 2.2Mbps which is pretty sucky, but it is what it is. (You can pay more for faster. This is basic account at ~$50/mo. btw, speedtest is at http://speedtest.oceanic.com/)
In a way, I wonder whether Oceanic figures why expand in HPP when Aloha is filling the gaps? Aloha relays the Oceanic Time Warner feed thru some sort of shortwave (microwave? something!) method using towers throughout HPP.
With this Aloha SNAFU, I have had to turn wifi off on my phone and use the phone to access internet for email and basic stuff. You CAN use your smartphone as a hub btw, but of course that'll use data. (iOS 9: Settings>Cellular>Set Up Personal Hotspot) Unfortunately, even w/the wifi on, the intermittent issues cause the phone to automatically go over to cellular off and on. So I have to make sure I have my cellular data turned off so as not to use it inadvertently. I am pretty sick of this situation.
Best cell is Verizon w/o a doubt. I would say on whole island, not just in HPP.
(edited to add iOS hotspot thingy)

For that matter, why bother with any wired broadband with Verizon (et al) will just put up a tower? The towers have to buy their broadband from somewhere, too, and I'm sure the wired carriers would much prefer to only deal with one (big) customer.

Mostly just wifi, but they do have some wimax in the (unlicensed) 3.65GHz band, all of which are subject to the limitations of fixed wireless (a tree gets taller, someone builds a house in the way, microwave ovens, contention with other wifi devices, etc).

Asking the County Council to address this issue will be futile but give it a try. Actually, The HPP Road Association has a contract with the cable companies and we need to get them to include a clause in the next contract that insures ALL of HPP must be served if the cable companies want to renew. The Council, given this is an election year, wont touch it. I tried filing a complaint with the FCC and eventually I received a notice that my complaint was addressed, and I still do not have internet access available. I have been told repeatedly that "my area is not serviceable" yet I can not get the two cable companies to define "serviceable area". Hearsay is not the answer, I want to hear if from the companies.
From personal experience, you will not be able to stream anything using the local companies, and if you do, expect to pay between $150-$200 per month for overage fees. I use ATT Hot Spot, but if you go over 10 meg your bill increases by $10 for every portion of additional megs.

Four of us on my street have Aloha and everyone but me streams movies w/no problem. I've never tried bc I'm too lazy to hook up to my router, which is in another bldg, and I already have enough to watch on my DVR!
It's probably best to support Aloha than hope for OTW or Hawaiian Telcom to step up to the plate. At least Aloha has an incentive bc they are trying to fill these gaps and want your business.

Find some cool neighbors on 5'th, that have the service, Use microwave, it's cheap (line of sight) up to 5 miles.... Tell cool neighbors that are likely on the 50 Megs down and 5megs up, you'll pay to upgrade the service, fasttest is 300megs down and 20 up. You'll have to buy a new modem (100 bucks). Microwave setup probably 100-200... I wouldn't see anything wrong is upping the speed and paying for the other half of the speed.
I just got hooked up, apparently, the comcast guy that came to my house was a real annal about hooking people up that were on temp power, this other tech was cool. He told me as long as there is a ground they can hook anyone up, yes, even on solar!
I'm super happy to get my own connection, but I was also super happy to have had a great neighbor that let me use part of their bandwidth. Of course I wasn't getting even close to a meg down seeing how the router was going though a few walls and a distance of about 300'. I'd help someone if they legitimately couldn't get it.
