A bill to raise the speed limit on Saddle Road
#11
"saddle road is about 50 or 60 miles long. a 5 mph increase would save about 5 minutes."

It saves a great deal more time than that if you don't get pulled over and ticketed for driving a safe but poorly determined legal driving speed.

The thing I like best about this scenario is that the police were ticketing people like crazy so people are using the legislative process to increase the speed limit.

The thing I like least is that the police are submitting fantasy testimony (lies) saying that if the speed limit is increased 5 or 10 MPH then everybody will be driving 100 MPH. First of all, the police are not supposed to have any say in the legislative process. They are supposed to cite factual information, and only if they are asked, not give baseless opinions. I've seen people on Saddle driving 100 MPH. So now when it happens the police are going to say "we told you so" ?

The correct course of action is to have the DOT map which sections of roads are safe at which specific highest speeds based on known factors of road construction, type of surface, degree of banking, etc and let the lawmakers base their decisions on facts. The higher the speeds on the downhill stretches, the less people will be applying the brakes or gearing down, and the more fuel efficient the trip becomes.

If, like the police are saying, people are already driving 60 or 65 and it hasn't earned any sinister nicknames like "Suicide Saddle" or "Deadly Danny Inouye Drive" then increasing the speed limit is the right thing to do. Especially since that is what the majority of drivers want. 65 seems like a safe speed limit on most of the road- the remainder can be marked for 60, 55, or 45 or whatever SCIENCE has determined is the safe speed.

ETA: Made the last use of the word SCIENCE in all caps for effect.

As a passenger in a car on a trip leading through North Dakota long ago, I was amazed at just how much 55mph on such a wide and open expanse could feel like a virtual crawl.

How often do you hear about Saddle road accidents anymore? How many times have cars hit pigs crossing the road? Meanwhile 130 is still as dangerous as ever in rush hour. And nary a cop. It's almost like they're up there just to drive fast and have fun. Weeee!

You bring up a good point: why are there so many cops ticketing speeders on a safe highway that it's been elevated to the point where citizens have made lawmakers take notice... yet there are all kinds of violence and property crimes committed in Puna and the lawmakers aren't reallocating Saddle Road CHiPs to where the crime is? (CHiPs = County of Hawaii island Patrol).

Further, these Saddle Road CHiPs speed traps are how far away from the nearest station? Like HOURS round trip?

Seems like a no-brainer: Stop driving many hours round trip to harass citizens for driving a safe speed and reallocate those hundreds of collective hours to put the cops where the crime is.

Want some SCIENCE Facts? How about this one? "SPEED KILLS!" yep... it's a fact... Proven too... Want some more facts? In the USA, cars are rated and geared for 55MPH (99%) of them anyway. So, going over that magic number you're just burning up resources.

According to studies backed by the department of energy, the average car will be at its advertised MPG at 55 mph. But as the speed increases:

- 4% less efficient at 60 mph
- 9% less efficient at 65 mph
- 17% less efficient at 70 mph
- 23% less efficient at 75 mph
- 28% less efficient at 80 mph

How about this? Leave an extra 4 minutes early, Slow down......... Save some cash, and enjoy the scenery! Plus, you won't have to worry about a cop hiding in the bushes. Smile

Is it really too hard to drive the (POSTED) speed limit? Drive with Aloha! I'm in no rush I guess.

55 / speed limit / cruise control folks, please stay to the right or move over asap, 4 or more cars behind you going up on single lane ? Please pull over, no Science needed.

Consideration is the best manner to have when driving on any road.

Please post your "studies backed by the department of energy " Biting my tongue 'till then since this + the rest is not exactly Puna Specific.

Is that what had to happen on 130 when the speed limit was changed? I admit I wasn't paying attention...

In this case, yes. Hawaii's legal maximum speed limit is still 55 mph. Any speed limit over that requires legislative action to change existing law.

Makes sense. Thanks!
