What is the appropriate speed limit? The Federal requirements for setting speed limits uses the 85 percentile rule for speed limit setting. This basically states that a speed study is to be made and the appropriate speed limit is what 85% of the vehicles travel at. For Saddle road everybody agrees that most people travel at 65 mph or faster. So, using the Federal standard of the 85 percentile rule, 65 mph is very appropriate.
What really kills and causes accidents are vehicles going slower than the reasonable speed based on the majority of traffic thus causing tailgating, dangerous passing and driver anxiety.
It is ridiculous to think that a 10 mph increase will cause drivers to increase their speed by another 10 mph. People drive at a speed they feel save at regardless of the posted limit.
Why are the police not wanting an increase in the speed limit. Maybe because it will decrease revenues and make it harder to get their monthly speeding ticket quotas.

The person who slows down when being recklessly tailgated by an impatient driver who apparently insists on speeding and putting everyone else on the road in danger, that's me. I don't have much sympathy for those complaining about their speeding tickets.

I'll flash my brake lights at someone tailgating, but usually I wouldn't slow down. If someone's been behind me for a while I'll pull over to let them pass if it's safe to do so.

I will slow down to a speed I feel is safe for myself and the occupants of my vehicle. If I need to brake suddenly and unexpectedly because of some other hazard in the road in front of me, I don't wish to be hit from behind by the tailgaiting driver who hasn't allowed for a safe braking distance in front of them.

Every speed trap I've ever seen on Saddle Road has been on the West slope, where they've been clocking the downhill traffic that has to brake constantly to maintain the posted 55. 65 would almost eliminate the need to brake in order to keep from speeding. Luckily, they the sit in the same spot almost every time and can be anticipated.

Don't know why they can't put up a solar powered "radar" sign on the steep downhills that give the driver a flashing "your speed is..." to remind them they are overspeeding due to grade conditions. If they really miss the revenue, place "photo surveillance" signs at both ends and turn the sign monitor to actually take a picture sent to the station by cell tower communication of the really bad offenders and they get a ticket in the mail along with a nice framable photo of them driving. Then the cops can tend to more important matters closer to the donut shop.

It's not so much that speed kills, than driving in a unsafe way for the conditions. It is safer to go 100 mph. If that is what traffic is doing (LA). Than driving slower than the traffic is going.

Sounds like stretching the concept there a bit. ...and comparing LA traffic to Saddle Road?

Uh, minimum is 40 on the 55 posted speed. So, if you going over 40, even one lane you aren't breaking any laws. Also, on the windy road (l lane parts) it's mostly 35 average 40... Stop speeding ... The 35 posted signs are there for a reason. I don't care what kinda rig you got behind me that is 3" from my bumper... The closer you get the SLOWER I go... back off... Follow the posted speed signs.
