The stated plurality of wounds may simply be indicative of the the type of weapon having been a shotgun. If the subject was shot with buckshot from sufficient range to allow for the pellets to spread, multiple wound tracts may manifest from a single shot. However, at a close range, the spread would be minimal and therefore may result in the pellets acting as a single mass resulting in a single wound tract. Even then, the presence of an intermediate influence, such as a tree branch being in the line of fire, can cause pattern to disperse even at close ranges. If fact, many variables, including but not limited to barrel length, choke constriction, wad type, pellet type, pellet size, and range can all influence the spread, pattern and wound characteristics.
My point is that without the actual details from the official investigation, everything here is merely conjecture. Which is nothing more than gossip really. Ultimately, it is all immaterial to us. The investigation is being conducted by persons who we entrust with such responsibilities. Instead of gawking, which is disrespectful at best, I propose that we take a moment to acknowledge that one life has been lost, and others' lives have been irreparably affected. Then, let's give thanks that we are not in their shoes.
Over my career I managed many investigations in which those who were affected were subjected to further victimization by the callous banter of those in the community. Supposition and rumor can be pretty damn hurtful to those left behind.
