Billy Kenoi indicted today of theft

There's no excuse for what Kenoi has done. It's ridiculous to even try to defend him. I've always had suspicions about his character and now unfortunately for the people of the Big Island, they have come to light. Let's be optimistic that our next mayor will be a good one.

My response was referring to Ms Cook Lauers "moral compass" and her willingness to mislead and engage in hyperbole and guilt by association. Her compass needs a little calibration for starters.

You mention Billys perceived lack of one....this is weak for a number of reasons. First, none of us share the exact same compass points along the way of our respective lives, there is no socially uniform "True North". There are a myriad of small and large decisions that whenviewed collectively one can get a sense of a persons likelihood to behave in a moral manner. But no one is always traveling "due north", not the Pope, not the Dalai Lama, and certainly not Harry Kim. Or Billy Kenoi.

You refer to "decent person" after questioning my ability to perceive what you believe. The implication is that I am not such a person since I don't share your worldview. You then describe 3 elements of your complaints against Billy "...dishonesty, theft, and prostitution..."
I'll dismiss the prostitution charge as salacious, completely lacking in proof and a clear example of yellow journalism by Ms Lauer. You and others will have the opportunity to watch how the case unfolds in court with our justice system on full display. There will be no prostitution charges. Your repetition of the charge lacks decency. Theft is easier to prove than dishonesty, after all if you've taken something that doesn't belong to you and don't return it to where you found it then you have practiced theft. We shall see if this actually happened.

When you opine, be careful of your characterizations, especially when based on conjecture, It is a moral failure to impugn, slander,or cast aspersions on others character. As you maintain your own compass be sure to check its calibration, you wouldn't want you to fall into hypocrisy. But if you did, with these anonomyous boards, only you would know.

They (newspaper) believe the mayor had been committing this type of theft from the community since 2010. Really our mayor should be a leader, maybe a fairly educated leader who can lead by example for others to follow,jmo. Now I am far from a pope, Dalai lama, or attorney myself but I have never set foot in one of those types of stripping establishments in my entire life. Until the mayor did, I had never spent a dollar in one either.

Looks like the mayor turned himself in to the pahoa police station this morning, easy enough.

This isn't about just one or two "lapses of judgement". He had a "lapse of judgement" every time he used that card for himself. Sounds like hundreds of "lapses of judgement" to me.

Hawaii County Mayor Billy Kenoi has turned himself in after being indicted last week on theft charges by a Hilo grand jury.

Kenoi was arrested and released about 11 a.m. Tuesday in Pahoa. He's set to appear in court Wednesday.

Todd Eddins, the mayor's attorney, said in a statement Tuesday afternoon that Kenoi is "heartened by the outpouring of support he has received from the people of Hawaii Island. He will continue to work tirelessly for his hometown."

Last week, after a months-long investigation, a grand jury indicted Kenoi in connection with his alleged misuse of a government credit card.

Kenoi was charged with two counts of second-degree felony theft, two counts of misdemeanor theft, three counts of tampering with government records and one count of false swearing.

The felony theft charges are each punishable by up to five years behind bars and a $10,000 fine.

Hawaii free press is notoriously biased against the Democratic establishment. Reading it for "news" is like reading the Enquirer or watching Fox...you only get a certain, and predictable, point of view.
Also, you'll be relieved to know, after avoiding them all your life, that there's NO stripping in "Korean" bars. There are strip bars in Honolulu, but it's not where the Mayor took his guests. At Korean bars there's pupu's and conversation, similar to a Geisha in Japan. It's a cultural thing, we don't have anything like it in the US. For me it's puerile and a waste of time and money. But in Asian business culture it's commonplace and expected. So sometimes I end up in one, feeling a bit silly.

The reasons his judgement is deemed "flawed" is the real story here. Those casting stones should have been reading Machivelli instead of Mother Jones.
Our island has deep structural issues and flaws. We need leaders who won't accept the status quo, who will build rather than hire, who say "Can" rather than "no can"...
Harry was hire plenty County workers and say "no can" to change for 8 years ( after personally milking overtime for hundreds of thousands of dollars throughout his tenure as CD chief)
Billy inherits a recessionary economy, a bloated County workforce, and steers a tight ship with major projects accomplished in his 8, (while using his County credit card for entertainment expenses)
Harry is viewed as a saint, Billy a sinner.
