Crossing an active lava flow is not without risk. However, after many, many hikes to the lava flows over the last 15 years, and many conversations with volcanologists, park rangers and other experienced lava hikers I have learned how to minimize those risks. And believe it or not, I am bright enough to have never had a problem doing it. You have to know when and where. Hard for your superior intelligence to believe, I'm sure.
I was hardly bragging or promoting “breaking the law”. I was simply offering an alternative to what seems like an unnecessary restriction on the use of the road built with taxpayer money. It wasn’t as if I put people’s lives at risk by parking there.
My previous hikes were from the designated parking area. Upon my return, I noticed many cars parked there without tickets. It was then that I realized that I could escort a friend to the lava flow. A friend who would not have been able to make the 8 mile hike, but probably would be able to do the 4 miles. So I took them out for what was probably the last time in their lives they would get to see active lava. And no, we didn’t cross the flow on that night. In fact we never went off the road, so my friend did not get to see the ocean entry.

Photographer Kawika Singson recently released video of himself running over an active lava field. The Big Island resident said it's the first time he's recorded his runs but said he's been doing it since the 1980s.
He agrees that it's dangerous and doesn't encourage people try it. Singson said he picks his steps carefully before running across the lava.

Those coconuts are not FDA,USDA,OHA or even WTFda approved. Jus' make sure you have plastic instead of stainless steel straw in your mouth when you fall on the unmarked, unlit trail.
Next up, lets work on bitching about those other businesses set up that fill another void people want and need. Like all those dang bicycles ...

I got nothing against business, especially when it meets a need -- but "the rules are for everyone", and County posture is that "the rules" are more important than what people want or need.
It's (not) funny how this works: cost of doing business is already higher than most other places, so let's strangle it with regulations. Some irony, too: all those people who create and enforce the rules need jobs too, even if it's not clear that their work adds any value.
Anecdote: guy opens a ramen place on Oahu, it does really well, so he seeks to expand ... in Texas. When asked "why not open on the neighbor islands", he cites cost and lead time. "It takes 6-12 months to open a restaurant here, and you have to pay rent on the space while you're waiting for inspections..."
Maybe someday we can have a real economy. Until then, lots of people will just do what they want anyway. As far as I'm concerned, County has no legitimate authority; all that remains is acceptance of liabilities created by our individual actions... not everyone is capable of this.
Yeah man, jus' busting balls and agreed, now how to keep the flies off ???

OMG.
All of us, bringing this back to topic, need to be safe and aware of the dangers of flowing lava...never mind the lava tubes all over the place, and the gas explosions that can happen at any moment (first hand experience, circa long time ago...60's or so...prior to Queen's Bath being taken.)

Well, I'm curious who's operating this venture, as our coconuts and trees have been stolen recently (Opihikao area; again). We have a grove of trees that have been chopped (for the nuts) and the "heart of the palm" (y'all know it's a delicacy, right?) in the past 15-20 years, mostly when Kaimu has "action". If only people had the decency to ask before "stealing", we would gladly share.
When someone tells me "I'm with the Hawaiian Kingdom, and S _ _ Keliiho'o_ _ _ _ said I could take what I want", NO. Upon further questioning, this one was from Chicago, lived here six (6) months, and claimed to be from some Indian tribe in Chicago! Further, my ohana (referenced above) never, never would allow anyone to enter our land without permission. A'ole. OMG. Sorry, TMI.
All of this activity with this recent flow is like a circus. There have been many before (lava flows), and many will be forthcoming. Just be reasonable and safe, please.
