Hurricane season 2016
I'm giving premature credit for our first bit of good fortune to the Fujiwhara Effect:

In other words, the Fujiwhara effect could turn Madeline a bit further to the south while nudging Lester slightly further north, steering both storms clear of the Big Island

If this was the year 1900 we would have never known a hurricane was headed our way, we would have made no preparations, and would have gone about our business like nothing happened.

For residents of HPP, you may wish to watch Hawaii News Now coverage of Hurricane Madeline tonight. I spoke an hour ago with Ben Gutierrez who was filming with Kaloli Point as a backdrop. He said the footage should be part of their storm report on the late news.

Thanks, HOTPE, not sure I'll be able to see the news at 10 but hopefully it'll be online. Do you happen to know exactly where they were filming?

Yes, on the cliffs along Beach Road, midway between Paradise & Maku'u

We EXPECT flooding whenever the storms get close. I would have been very suprised if it didn't Hawaiibound. For me that is a given. We on the big island have been "spoiled" over the years by the mountains saving us from damaging winds (the biggest danger). Iselle made us feel less safe.

Most of the forecast tracks have Lester skirting above our islands. However there are a few predicted tracts that go under our island (unlikely). With the other system so close though, I still have concerns the two will interact and possibly do freaky, unpredictable things. Guess I'll keep my hurricane prep boards up for a few days. I predict sunshine and for Puna though.

Here's raw footage from Ben Gutierrez on Hawaii News Now from the HPP coast last night. It's on Facebook, but should load and play within a few seconds:
