Xray would be good but you need to see a Dr. Before one can be "ordered".
Even then, an X-ray only shows so much. MRI is the best diagnostic tool, but normally follows Xray if symptoms persist. MRI's are rarely ordered until after an Xray.
About the bruising, I've had bruising with every broken bone, legs, ankles, knee. Bruising does not eliminate the possibility of fractures/tears.
If you want to use compression, (a bit late) all the feed stores have the self adhering rolls of stretchy tape. It's a lot cheaper than the people kind, comes in packs of multiple rolls and flamboyant colors. Good stuff to have around. If compression is applied right after injury it does help reduce swelling. Now, it would just give you some support and stableization and remind you not to move too fast or far.
