I have to admit, although I've been here a long time now, I would have struggled to pronounce that name correctly first time round!
Apparently speaking English in Hawaii is a communications barrier.
I would also like to add in the staff of both papers for the chopping blocks. They seem to be making the articles too long and too complex the average Hawaii reader doesn't seem to be able to complete nor understand them. This leads to posters running half informed spewing misinformation on public forums.
I used to have to do research to combat these people, but lately it seems all you have to do is read the articles they post.

Which is exactly why call centers should be on-island and staffed with locals.

At least the call center isn't in Pakistan or India. They are lots of fun to talk to "Paul", or "Elizabeth" in their American English comprehension. Especially when they want your full Social Security number or credit card number, and not just the last four numbers.

One time when the power was out I tried to call Helco to report it. Since the computer wasn't available with power out I had to try and find the number using the tiny screen and crappy browser on my phone. I wasn't sure if I had the right Heco/Helco # because every island is different.
The kind lady who answered my call didn't sound like she was on this island so my first question was "Is this the number for the Big Island?"
"Yes, this is the number for the main island."
I knew I had the wrong number, but went through the motions anyway. After she got my address and put me briefly on hold, she told me I had dialed the number for Oahu and gave me the correct number.
After I was done I wrote the correct number inside my electrical panel.
