I did ask a manager at Ace who told me the exact same thing as my technician who will remain unnamed, he doesn't want any new clients.

Instead of getting pissy, a couple of you could do your own research and graciously share the results.

I saw a sign once on the big propane tank next to ace in pahoa, said it was OPEN... Dunno, drove by people were filling tanks again, about 2 weeks ago. Maybe they were just selling off the remaining propane??? Shurg... didn't stop to ask.

Anyway, yeah my red headed step child technician told me! Big Grin I can tell you this...... I've gotten my propane from WHOEVER was selling it cheaper... for the last 5 years... And my $99.00 L5 eco-temp hot water heater is running just as good as it has since I got it. Maybe I got lucky? Doubtful...

More than likely it doesn't matter where you get propane as long as it's hooked up right, I do have newer tanks, that aren't all rusted out, I clean the ends of the threads and don't let them rust. So, I'd think, it's more than likely poorly maintained equipment than the quality of the gas, but... That's my three cent story! Big Grin Also, I transport my tanks (2 five gallon type) in the trunk of my car, so, they the threads aren't all wet like it would be in a pickup truck. So no dirt and bugs, I only have two tanks and don't sit around full, they are both filled at the same time and hooked right back up.

Hawaiiagas charges $6.40/gallon when I talked to them, but that's delivered. Maybe I'm getting ripped off?

What about Amerigas and Blue Rhino? "Gas utility" only applies to gas operators with pipelines, correct? So there is propane on the island from other sources. (not presented as a statement of fact, more like a drawn conclusion that may or may not be accurate).

"4.59 @ 130 @ maku'u propane"

Thanks for the info! Last I checked it was $5.28 at Orchidland. If Ace really is $6.40/gallon that is some slum pricing. Until I hear differently I'll be going to Maku'u.

Oh we're ALL getting ripped off no matter where we fill. Just came from my place in northern Canada. You know what we pay for propane at Costco there? .45/litre which translates to 1.70 a gallon here (3.78L), and if you convert that from CDN to USD it's only 1.25 USD. I know they gotta ship it but damn, somebody is making a heck of a profit somewhere.

What about Amerigas and Blue Rhino?
---------------
Good point, terracore.
Do you think they ship them here, filled? Or are they filled here (or filled on Oahu and barged here) ? If filled here, there's only one that gets bulk shipments.

We get our Propane at Hilo Propane.
Joe the owner has PURE propane.
He has a list of the different grades of propane.
Many grades have sulpher of various amounts in their propane.
Called Ag gas.
We also get a commercial discount of 10 cents on a gallon.
$5.00 is Joes base price.
We pay $4.90 a gallon.
Ag gas creates soot and will eventually clog the orifices of any propane appliance.
The america gas n blu rhino only put 3 haf gallons in the bottle as required by some obscure law.
In addition - most propane outside hilo town is ag gas but kai store is also ag gas.
The blu rhino ships their tanks in from main land with 3.4 or 3.5 gallons in each 5 gal bottle,n sends empty back, they are located in Kona.

I go to Village Propane in Mountain View. Price is $5.00/gallon. Pretty good price, convenient, and friendly. I must say that if you read much about this sort of thing you quickly learn how much we spend here in Hawaii. Mainland prices are something like $2/gallon. Also it is often less expensive per gallon if you get a big fixed tank. Here it costs you more per gallon.
