if the county makes a 'special' road for bicyclists, the county will be liable for maintaining the road for road bikes...

Right. Because liability for dead tourists is so much cheaper, and it's hardly newsworthy, so nobody ever hears about it.

Perhaps that is why the lying cop was terminated from the force. When he tried to use that excuse. ( falsifying documents .. that is incident reports)

I don't think it was the cop that made the claim about being blinded by the sun, but his boss.

All I know is the original story was posted around March 1. We are still in March and I take my kid out to the bus stop in hilo at 6:45 am and the sun is just barely 20 degrees off the ocean. There is no way anybody could see the sun at that time if you are on the other side of the mountain.it would still be in shadow.

If someone in dept. Was tring to cover for him perhaps they are an accessory to the fact.

Just to correct myself, it wasn't the cop's boss that spoke about the sun, but a Fire Dept battalion chief. It's discussed near the start of this thread.

Well it Looks like the county is poised to authorize $50,000 to defend the former police officer who killed a Michigan cyclist while on duty.

Of course the accident that happened was tragic and should have been avoided but what this cop did or reported afterwards is just unacceptable. Anyone know if the victims family has decided to sue the county of Hawaii or if a settlement was offered to the victims family?

***Ruling*** Court granted states motion to continue trial and set trial as follows Jury Trial set for: 10-24-2017 at 9:00 am, all other deadlines shall remain the same. Jackson to submit the order
