Very few homeless people are actually alcoholics. Most are drug addicts or mentally off.
I had a boss once who told me alcoholics make the best workers because they want to support their habit. Whereas drug addicts and mentally off people can't make that connection..and usually end up doing illegal things to get by.

Absolutely. Very few homeless people are alcoholics, you're right.
Oh, wait.
It is believed that about 38% of homeless people abuse alcohol while 26% regularly use other drugs. These statistics show that substance abuse among this group is significantly higher than the general population.

Huh, turns out that they use alcohol more than they use other drugs.
Somehow, in light of this fact, I doubt that alcoholics are the best workers who usually don't do illegal things.

Tell that to the meth heads and potheads in my neighborhood.. maybe they will stop breaking into cars down here.
You don't get out much in the world do you..have you ever had a job?
Not everybody gets free money to support their habits.some people work for it.

Don't change the subject. You're trying to say that A. Homeless people aren't typically alcoholics, when I just posted proof that in fact, they are. B. You're saying that alcoholics are the best workers, and that they somehow do less illegal things than other substance abusers. This is not true.

H.O.T.P.E. says ,,,,
Here in Puna, we also have limitations on what can be accomplished, largely by two main factors:
1) Funding
2) Qualified care
This is it...bingo.. for the entire Island!
Of course, someone out of their mind with a mental illness or massive addiction is going for the things that sustain them in their realm of thinking. (food, drugs, alcohol)
How many beds at our only hospital were recently eliminated for people experiencing psychotic episodes ? And they were replaced where????? And the hope of housing at the Catholic church??
I agree, it's upsetting to have to walk by the mentally disturbed on my way to our club's sail boats by Suisan, it's disturbing to maneuver thru them on the Pahoa sidewalks. They exist and are broken to the point of not being able to fix themselves. I can not fix them....I can not help them and I consider it a big black mark on our society that there appears to be so little help available for them.

You are quite the a$$ aren't you? We can start with John in the wheelchair, who has bottles of hard liquor daily and gets abusive to people walking by him. Should I have taken pictures this morning and posted them for you? Maybe YOU should go by early morning and see for yourself?
This community rallied when Luquin's burned - most likely due to homeless drug addicts - and people posted very ecstatically when they got ran out. Well, I am just reporting that some of the old regulars are back and you attack me?

bananahead, why exactly are you asking this question? If names can't be named then the situation doesn't exist? If names can't be named then it's not a problem?
Isn't the real question whether there are in fact people drinking and sleeping on the sidewalk? Names or not?
You could never convince a monkey to give you a banana by promising him limitless bananas after death in monkey heaven.

bananahead - Since you know them so well, please tell me the names of those regular bums who are asking for help and cannot get it?
Are you also OK with them peeing and defecating in doorways of Pahoa businesses? Have you asked them to stop doing so?
