TMT - Contested Case Hearing Status - Hilo
@ geochem: There is hope for the TMT to turn out better than Oahu rail . . . if it is ever built. While they have been hamstrung by the incompetent state government and held hostage by self-destructive Hawaiian fanatics, TMT is a private non-profit and not subject to nearly the level of patronage demands and tolerance for overcharging that a state project would incur. Of course it wouldn't surprise me to see the protesters and/or OHA try a financial shakedown at the last minute if it looks like the project will go through.

a financial shakedown at the last minute

Recurring tendency: make up the rules as you go along. "Oh, you made it this far? Well now you're going to need..."

It would be more "fair" (in the "level playing field" sense) if the "rules" were published in advance, with a fee schedule, so that people could make realistic plans.

Instead, we have the "government contractor" system: the project is cheap ... until it's actually started, then suddenly the costs go up, next thing you know it's "too big to fail" (see also: "sunk cost fallacy").

Suing for mismanagement.OHA. SMH
Yeah, they're a shining example of how an organization should be managed.

One Thing I can always be sure of is that things will never go as expected.

"Construction of the solar telescope on Haleakala Maui is set to resume. "The Protectors" are on alert. Let's see what happens."

Good, let it all come to a head there and create a precedent for here.

Perhaps the $200k per year to OHA for no real reason that the TMT was going to pay them wasn't enough.

Update on the Haleakala Solar Telescope protest last night. It appears the truck convoy carrying parts for the observatory had to stop for a time, but was allowed to continue after protestors voluntarily departed or were removed from the roadway. The trucks travel at 2-5 MPH, so should reach the summit some time today.

* At least five people were arrested early Wednesday
* Around 3 a.m., officers pushed people out of the way to allow the crews to pass and even carried out several people who were lying on the ground.
* Others were warned to leave the area peacefully or they would face arrest.

Four people are in a room and seven leave. How many have to enter again before it's empty?

This is an interesting article that explains some of the circumstances from the telescope protest on Maui.

Looks like The police were prepared with more numbers and new techniques on how to handle the protectors. Not much respect was shown for this peaceful protest as they were arresting protectors on day one of this protest. jmo's

Oh, I'm not so sure. It was more respect than the protesters showed for the law and will of the majority of Hawaii's citizens. Also, some were warned and allowed to leave without being arrested. No police violence reported. Sounds pretty good to me.

If the Protectors consider themselves Hawaiian Nationals and refuse to recognize the US Government, then why not just deport them for entering the country illegally?

Not much respect was shown

I don't think the protestors showed much respect for the final decision by the Hawaii Supreme Court, the ultimate arbiter in this case, the highest law of the aina:

However, in October of 2016, the Hawaii Supreme Court issued its ruling in support of continued construction after finding that the management plan for the Haleakala summit provided a sufficient assessment of potential environmental impacts.

Protestors were asked nicely to get off the road. Respect.
