should the neighbor islands pay for rail?

keaau mary has the obvious answer. You could also increase car registration fees on Oahu only. We're all getting pretty fed up with Oahu's dissing of neighbor islands.

Latest studies show Oahu highway traffic going up after rail is finished.

Is that a result of the continued population increase on Oahu?
Does the study show any overall net decrease in traffic by motorists who will use rail instead of their car? Or does rail simply offer an additional option for existing bus riders?

Four people are in a room and seven leave. How many have to enter again before it's empty?

I think it's got something to do with the fact that rail doesn't go anywhere useful -- and even where it sort of does, you're driving to the nearest station.

In theory, rail will bring "transit oriented development" (read: tomorrow's slums), but given the rate of growth, that could take decades.

From what I saw from the air, the rail seems to be going in the direction of the Disney Resort. With that in mind, one can see that they would not to run it to the airport, because then it would be too obvious that the rail was intended to shuttle Tourii to the resort and back as a primary reason for the rail.
So, let's get real and talk Disney Inc. to pony up the funds to complete, and run it to the airport so their shuttles can pick them up at the end of the line on the resort side until the general plan is complete on that side of the island and extend the rail line to service the up and coming resorts. Of course part of that general plan is apartments and such along the rail line for gleaning the resort workers salaries in rents and train fare, with a few "convenience" supermarkets with the traditional ghetto pricing along the way.

I thought the reason why our property taxes have gone up is because, Oahu needed money for the rail. So aren't we already paying for it? Or was Kim lying again?

Not only are we paying for it, we will get to keep paying for it, because rail will require subsidies.

NIMBYs contribute to property tax increases too: if you can't broaden the base, those remaining must each pay more. I really wish this were quantified and reported with assessments. "Your share of the hotel not being built is $x/year."

Quite likely.
Sounds like Oahu politicians and their buddies.
Modern "Plantation Politics".
Just substitute "tourism and resorts" for "plantations'[Wink]
