Phone weirdness
#11
This island in many ways is 50+ years behind the times.
Rain - moisture corrodes the antique copper lines on a very regular basis.
Many folks move here thinking about mainland ways and when a problem occurs want the corporation to fix it yesterday,Not going to happen.
Best way is to go in and have a sit down with regional manager and be ultra polite.Might get repaired in the next several years or not.
Go with the flow - hang loose.

"I dunno, Tom. I think maybe those beeps are a message of some sort"

Perhaps, but any nefarious communications, even by aliens, that communicate via HawTel clearly haven't thought out their plans too well.

Commander Zefelbod to his alien infiltrators: "It's time to send the beeps via the human communication lines on this isolated place to start the invasion".

2nd officer Yilyod-beyjum III: Sir, we did, but everyone ignored it because that happens all the time and then the line goes dead, and they can't send out technicians until sometime next week.

1st officer Xxcloyldd: Commander, lets postpone the mission until they fix it. In the meantime, HawTel have a good deal with free caller ID which helps our intelligence section gather information on these strange earthlings living in the middle of nowhere. You remember how bad things got in New Mexico in 47...

That beep beep beep sound is actually Morse Code that the technicians at the office are using to verify if the signal is still good on the telegraph lines they installed initially. "Yup! Everything's good here!" (Insert thumbs up)
