TMT - Contested Case Hearing Status - Hilo
I hope your job as a greenskeeper doesn't involve you spreading deadly chemicals on the aina over there.
Good to see you took your bigoted attitude (e.g. against immigrants) with you, we can always do with less of that over here.

Along with the THINK fund which is essentially funded by the TMT, the Maunakea Scholars program is also expanding giving more opportunities to Hawaii students to become involved in STEM-related projects. FYI, Gypsy, this will do more than teaching someone to take turns while showing them to remain humble and competitive - astronomy has a way of doing that. It will also show that hard work increases your chances of "good luck" and will certainly aid them in becoming mentally flexible and "much much more".

Vicente of course pointed out that no one living in Hawaii is a US citizen because they can't be naturalized.

Brandon carried on about unlined cesspools on mauna kea on the burial grounds, which there aren't. I couldn't even understand his points. "Area E is a type of ethnocide which is a type of genocide."

They also made veiled threats, "I would die for the mountain". "We will block you...Thousands!"

None of them proved they couldn't perform their new religious practices, in fact many talked about how over time they've done more and more ceremonies up there.

The only solid point that I think they made was that the rent was too low and that other telescopes should be re-assessed but that issues is unrelated to the TMT.

I think naleo.tv will put it up later for replaying if you missed it. At the very least you might enjoy the conch cell blowing after anti-tmt speeches.

Brannon is an emotional trainwreck. If anyone missed his violent rant in 2015 you can read it at

The strategy to "go emotional" was fruitless. Crying about being arrested, crying about the stress caused by participating in the contested case hearing - this is not an effective legal strategy.

I predicted in February, "From what has been presented so far, the petitioners opposed to the TMT have not provided strong evidence that the TMT does not satisfy the eight criteria for construction in a conservation district. They are going to lose their case. DLNR will approve the CDUA."

The TMT opponents needed a top US litigator like David Boies to have a shot at winning in the second hearing. They had more lawyers this time including Clarence Ching and Lanny Sinkin, but lost again.

Perhaps. Their main strategy has been to force delays. That why they "fired" their lawyer so the large groups could go from something like 1 representative (their lawyer) to about 10 individuals who all had to have a turn at the podium.

...and it's not even an original strategy, they "borrowed" it, just like when they "borrow" that road to drive up to the MK summit.

In 2015 Larry Sinkin was given money by Russia to attend a separatist conference in Moscow.

One of the most exotic and weird guests, and the main object of press attention, was Lanny Sinkin, who identifies himself as a representative of the “Independent Sovereign State of Hawaii” and “adviser to King Edmund Keli’i Silva, Jr.” In late 2014 he moved to Honolulu to help restore the monarchy in the 50th American state to secede from the U.S.

The self-proclaimed envoy of the Hawaiians had the rapt attention of the eclectic separatist throng, which included a Northern Irish skinhead with arms tattooed up to the shoulder, an African in a baseball cap topped with sunglasses representing the Pan-African international movement “Uhuru,” and a brawny type in a camouflage jacket with a “Novorossiya” stripe on the sleeve, to mention just a few.

“I’ve never seen so many freaks gathered together in one place,” commented Russian documentary maker Beate Bubenec.

Here's a picture of Larry at the meeting:

I hope the following link works. It's a google translation of Galileo's second link. Posted more for humor than anything else.

Or rookies?

Just a side note, but sort of relates to the thread. Back in the late 80s when I was an undergraduate student, the Soviet Union would often boast that they had developed the largest optical telescope in the world. This was actually true, no other optical telescope on the planet had such a large primary mirror at the time. What they didn't tell the world is that it didn't work very well, was built in an abysmal location for optical astronomy and was designed so poorly that it could never compare with other observatories.

It still exists to this day and after decades of upgrade attempts does perform reasonably well, but can't compete with any of the current Mauna Kea optical/IR telescopes.
