Keaau Village Market moving

Been trying to give the vendors as much business as can. But it’s kind of an obstacle course when the gas station and McD’s are busy

Funny thing -- traffic studies are required as part of the development process, but somehow we still have congestion. Would these land-uses be approved based on current traffic studies?

Dragging out the permit process and constraining development to designaged "Village Commercial" areas doesn't seem to solve the problem of increased traffic due to population growth. We need a better answer...

all you have to do is look at the traffic on 130 to know that the county/ states population estimate is way off. And the Village Center idea will not work if you don’t put it where the people are! If The closing in on 20K people in HPP have to drive 10 miles for a gallon of milk, the walkable village idea is just planner porn

You are both correct.
I would say we need the US Attorney to clean State and County government officials up, then subsequently,
do some intelligent, cost effective planning, with mainland or internationally accomplished planners.

It also won't work if you don't actually build them, which is what we have now.

20K people in HPP have to drive 10 miles for a gallon of milk

I thought they "chose" to "keep it country"?

the county/ states population estimate is way off

It's not about "population", it's about "keeping all development in Hilo because that's where the important landowners have all their commercial property".

I say -- again -- if it's "all about Hilo", fine, give us 6-8 lanes to get to/from Hilo; if widening the highway isn't an option, fine, let us have our "village commercial".

I wonder how many more "studies" it will take to figure this one out...

Then I have to ask: why did we waste all that time/money creating "Community Development Plans" if we're not going to allow any actual development?

Why, it's almost like pointless busywork designed to make the public feel like their opinions matter ... with the side effect that all development is put "on hold" pending the outcome of the "Plan" ...

Off-topic but on-topic, apogies for the threadjack.

http://www.hawaiitribune-herald.com/news...-due-crash

Civil Defense and Hawaii County police are advising motorists of a fatal crash that has closed Highway 11 at the 47 mile marker. An early morning statement from authorities says the road might be closed for several hours and that motorists should avoid the area because there are no detours and no alternative routes.

Shipman among others, that's why.
Remember the howling public meeting in Kea'au soon after the approval of the PCDP?
Mostly populated by Shipman and "Hilo" flacks?
After that, the PCDP was a sham and has been since then (2008).
I called it for what it was then.

No, it was always a sham.

Most of the CDPs bascially say "keep everything exactly where it is". Example from PCDP: the Orchidland General Store is (retroactively) in a designated "Village Commercial" area. Presto! Plan complete! No need anything else ever!
