Police Make Pot Patients Give Up Their Guns

So you posted this for your entertainment
No, the Honolulu police department provided the entertainment. And, not being a gun enthusiast or a MM patient I haven't any direct way of knowing if there was anything like this here, so thought I'd ask.

And now, today, in the Trib the headline reads...

An illegal combo: Firearm permits being denied to medical marijuana patients

The Hawaii Police Department has a letter it sends to medical marijuana patients seeking a gun permit that’s similar to a letter sent by the Honolulu Police Department which has cannabis advocates up in arms, so to speak.

And yes, entertaining. To me the whole thing brings up visions of reefer smoking gun toting cows giving lip service to police in patrol cars trying to round them up.. a Gary Larson kind of thing.

But on a more serious note, I agree with alaskyn66 @ 19:13:02.

The main point, to me, is that all this humbug about pot is just silly when we have a seemingly endless amount of misery visited upon us by those who favor alcohol, and laws that virtually condone it. In other words the only way to take all this seriously would be to have policies that are equally applied to all users of mind altering chemicals. Pot, alcohol, prescription meds. Then yes, we might be making some headway in reducing gun violence. Which, I think we can all agree, is the real problem. But picking on pot smokers.. that's just silly. You know, take a hit*, get the munchies, eat some popcorn, silly!

*which I don't do, oddly enough for health reason, but I sure am 420 friendly.

So this is more selective enforcement. It's okay if you lied before to get your gun permit. They won't be coming after you or your guns even if it a crime to lie on the form but you they will deny your application if you tell the truth.

So I see a few comments about not registering your guns due to having MMJ cards. I have a couple of questions, what is the purpose of having a firearm illegally? Self protection? Hunting? Target practice?

Let's take self protection first. No matter how justified you are, felony charge for possession of unregistered firearm. I won't even bother talking about the civil costs when sued for wrongful death.

Next, hunting. So you have a hunting license and go pop porky for dinner. DNLR checks you, felony charge.

Target practice? Where? Lol so you get checked by a cop, felony charge.

Ultimately I believe in lawful ownership of firearms, but I would have some concerns with the mindset of someone who says I don't have to follow the law if I don't agree with it.

Interesting topic for sure.

You would have at least 1 unregistered handgun, which you conveniently place next to the dead intruder's body, while you show police your properly registered gun that took care of the intruder.

People are creative. They will report their guns stolen during a burg. Then apply for MM card.
One Thing I can always be sure of is that things will never go as expected.

I have no personal investment in this topic, but the title seems somewhat misleading to me:

"Police Make Pot Patients Give Up Their Guns"

It's not the Hawaii police who make HI state and federal law but they have to follow those laws. You might as well say "police tell people that murder is illegal". Would that make such a headline?

Maybe it'd be worth changing the subject of this thread as it's blaming the wrong people. It's those who make the laws who should be targeted, not those enforcing them.

You see Tom, as the Sanctuary cities have taught us, Local and State police are free to ignore Federal laws that they do not agree with.

Hawaii police are able to reach a similar conclusion and disregard the Federal laws regarding marijuana prohibition, but they don't. Hence the HPD specific frustration.
