It will be very interesting to see how this case progresses, whether we will go the way of some mainland states and virtually legalize cold blooded murder.

Sorry if I offended anyone but harrowing personal anecdotes notwithstanding, bringing a gun into your house will do the opposite of make you and your family safer, especially here in Hawaii.

Yes, thank you Jon. There are responsible gun owners here in Puna as well as elsewhere. One of the reasons I posted this topic is that so often I'll read comments from enthusiastic gun owners in Puna (as well as elsewhere), who make comments along the lines of "if anyone tries to break into my home, I'll be ready for him. Locked & loaded. Damn the torpedoes, I'll blast that criminal!!!"

If you repeat that message often enough to yourself, you'll believe you know exactly what is happening on the other side of your front door. You won't take even a moment to determine that it might be a neighbor who stayed out too late, had a few too many, because you've already convinced yourself this is the moment you knew and expected would always happen. And you're ready for it.

Only sometimes, it's not what you imagined. In this case it didn't work out like the Ewa Beach gun owner thought it would all the times he may have rolled that scenario around in his mind. A responsible gun owner would pause for a moment while he's still safely behind his locked front door. Would you? As a responsible Puna gun owner?

Crime is going up with the population and police response times are ‘ after the fact ‘. So how about someone selling and providing training for effective ‘less than lethals’ for Puna homeowners

Funny, I thought firearms permits required training?

That training should have covered things like "be sure what you're shooting at", mine did.

Of course generalizations can be insulting. The fact that people are insulted doesn't make them any less true. The most common generalization is that that some minorities are disproportionately involved in crime (true).

Opposition to generalizations should be dispassionate.

The generalization "People with guns are generally not clearheaded individuals" is debatable. I would generalize that these folks are belligerent when it comes to self-defense. And generally support harsh law and order positions: long prison terms, forced labor of prisoners (good ideas).

But in a fair number of cases gun owners are unbelieving about the actual incidence of violent crime (low). This would attest to a lack of clearheadedness. And perhaps a bit of paranoia.

I say require liability insurance and let the insurance people decide who is responsible and who is not. The insurance companies are completely pragmatic and non emotional about it. They just do risk assessment. I would guess that, barring any criminal or health history, the more training someone has the less risk they would represent.
