Home Defense Shooting? Or Mistaken Victim?
#51
Yes, I know. Not the .0000000001% of the time when the power goes out.

Unless you're off-grid! But then, what if you bought cheap batteries!

It will still somehow be the the gun's fault, even though we live in Hawaii. The circular nature of these tirades is a near-perfect explanation of how we ended up with our fossilized antique government.

Let's pass a building code revision that requires all doors to be made of speed bumps (available from DoT, for a price) capable of stopping a shotgun round: people can keep their shotguns, neighbors can come home drunk and disoriented, contractors to install the doors, inspectors to verify compliance, DoT makes enough profit to install "free" speed bumps as necessary. Just so much winning, for everyone.

None of this will bring the sailor back, but you know, he did sign up to serve his country, at least back when that meant something.

As an alternative, revised building codes could be require homes to install trap doors and a dungeon. It worked exceptionally well for Jabba the Hutt as I recall. These dungeons would double as safe rooms for the residents in case of hurricane, etc (perhaps not inundation by tsunami, as a properly configured trap door and dungeon would by necessity be below grade)

Tragic for a service member to have to die this way, especially in Hawaii.
There have been quite a few stories recently of returned soldiers having survived the battlefield, only to be shot dead back home.
Then again, more Americans have been killed by guns in the last 50 years than in all of the wars the US has ever been involved in.

Hadn't thought of using your car alarm to try to scare off bad guys. I'll have to test ours, and see if it will work from our bedroom.

Seriously? Is this some mainland stat that you are trying to extrapolate to Puna? Your camera is useless because they hide their face using masks and hooded sweatshirts. Your alarm is useless because HPD response time is woefully inadequate. Local thieves are not concerned about your Alarm system.

I was driving home the other day, I had just passed Nanawale and 2 HPD vehicles passed me coming up from Lava Tree. Well as soon as the Hawaiian Blue Light Specials went by, the cars in front of me sped up significantly because they knew that they had just passed the only 2 cops in Lower Puna at the time.

Hawaii County Police do not have the budget or the manpower to provide mainland urban response times. Therefore, there is a need to be able to protect oneself.

PaulW, what would you have had UsGuys do if the machete wielding drugged-up guy threatening to rape and murder his family had gotten into the house?

I believe in Puna the stats will show that instances of extremely violent robberies are rare. Yes, they can happen, but almost never do. The vast majority of break-ins occur when residents aren't home, in which case a gun would do nothing. Worse than nothing as the weapon would probably be stolen by the thieves.

Here's a statistic about preparedness for you:

A large majority of Puna residents are not financially ready for their retirement.
Of those future retirees, most of them are doing nothing to improve their situation.

Yet almost all of them will retire someday. It's almost guaranteed.
Humans are terrible at determining their own risk in a given situation.

You really think that burglars don't care about alarm systems? Insurance companies certainly seem to think so, and they have a vested interest in this. Your fanciful dreams have no effect on reality, sorry.

Just because one drugged up guy threatened to break into someone's house, doesn't mean millions of people should arm themselves necessarily, leading to the inevitable thousands of unintended deaths and injuries. We're very very safe here in Hawaii. Tone down the paranoia.
