Hawaiian Acres
#51
Oh Thanks Mella! I am a single mom and I just want to raise my son with culture and small town peace and calm. As with my whole family. I know that there's no escaping alot of things in this world. But Puna just seems like such an amazing place filled with all of that. It would be very sad if Hawaii lost it's culture and slow ways like so many other places have lost their history and heart. If that makes sense...
Thanks for your input. It makes us feel much better.

Aloha BJK,

It hit me the other day about the irony of what makes us fall in love with this place is what drives us crazy when we are trying to get things done. While visiting and falling in love with the "slow pace of the islands", it can drive one to drink (more) when trying to get a house built. Just a thought for the day that helped me to slow down, take a chill pill and remember to go-with-the-flow and realize that no matter how stressed I may get over the time line of things happening, it will in due time. It dawned on me that Eden Roc is the perfect name for the neighborhood I will be in just as Hawaiian Paradise Park is the perfect one to be in currently. For so many this IS our garden of Eden and in many ways our Genesis.
See how profound one can get when playing hooky from the day and its' lengthy list of things-to-do! Besides, it's to hot to do anything else! L O L! pj

Hi BJK, if you go to the Hawaiian Acres web site http://hawaiianacres.org and click on the history of The Acres, you will read of the areas' mj past. I for one believe it is like everywhere else you go, it's around and whether you choose to go looking for it or not is your bussiness. I also believe that no one is going to get shot should you stumble on to a plot, unless your caught sampling Wink. Remember though that most of what is available for reading is near outdated as soon as it hits the shelves. I guess thats to say things are a changing, more and more newcomers arriving all the time and nobody involved with illegal goings-on like to be around too many law abiding folks, makes em nervous I should think. So as the old Knight said "choose wisely" I also think you'll find The Acres a very communal area. You can also read the 2005 newsletter that is mailed out yearly after dues have been paid. The biggest problems being faced by folks today is the indiscriminant bulldozing of old growth rainforest, potholes, barking/biting dogs, feral pigs, overnight sprouting of junks cars in the roadways and the occaisional property theft.

On the lighter side of things there is talk of a bus route through The Acres. The would be down 8 Rd to F Rd to 9 Rd and out through Ainaloa Blvd. Great for those who can't drive Smile( or find travel expenses overwhelming. The buses are currently being thought over, a story I will follow closely.

Aloha! Single girl with horse looking to buy land now and eventually move to Puna area from Honolulu. Have been looking hard at Hawaiian and Fern Acres. Fern Acres, having the better roads, but one less acre. Does anyone know of any horseback riding trails in the nearby Mountain View area? Saw lots of horses on North Kulani Rd/ Ihope Road/ Peck Road areas, but can't afford more than $50,000. Any other subdivisions/areas within 40 minutes of Hilo a person would recommend for horse lovers? Would be grateful for any advice.

Hi Sunnhippie, I have seen horses riding by our place in HA. Miles of roads to ride on, I might be concerned about loose dogs. I haven't heard about any designated horse trails, but I am sure there are some horse lovers on this site that would know.

Aloha, Scott

Doesn't Fern Acres have those really skinny spagetti lots?

Sunnhippie,
Sarah is involved (heavily)into horses and the club there. She works at the UH at Hilo.
She lived in Kaumana and gave out her number on the other forum, so I can give it here.
Call her at Sarah Blanchard 934-9246 or email "Sarah Blanchard" <sarah@wolf-den.com> . She will know all about what to expect and give you great answers! Important too to find a vet and all.....

When you arrive, let me know and maybe I can see your horse too one day!

Aloha,
Lucy

Actually, the typical 2 acre Fern Acres lot is 100' x 871.6'

Thanks for the correction Gene!

For some reason, I was thinkin they were 125 by 1046, but yea that would be over 3 acres :-)
