Rain abates in Hilo--but don't go to Rainbow Falls
#41
I don't know about some of the new influxes of folk moving to the Big Island, but I do know that most of us who moved here prior to the building boom came here specifically because we are nature people. Nature people find excessive control from government unacceptable. That said CD did a superb job with the recent lava flow except with the Leilani residents, that's where the are still over stepping their boundaries crushing the spirit of our friends and neighbors.

a few intrepid punatics plodded through the shin deep water to hand clear the worst of the rocks on the roads... making a path through the elements.

Great video ironyak, and great comment Punatic007, about the Puna can-do spirit. Just like after Iselle when residents fired up their own chain saws and cleared roads from fallen albizia trees, last night Puna folks rolled up sleeves, then tossed or rolled rocks off the highway. No alternative route? No problem. We're going home.

Are we a dying group?

Love it!!!
Yesterday afternoon, ,my mate, on his bicycle ride, noticed runoff at the beginning of our unpaved road. It was starting to cause some serious erosion. He went back, shovel in hand and made a trench for the water to run off properly. Then , refilled the pot hole.

I'm not sure how 100+ citations threatening people with $5000 fines and up to a year in jail (some given while people where looking for lost pets or helping people evacuate), or dozens of inaccurate, incomprehensible, or incorrect messages, or being unable to answer basic questions from residents at the community meetings is doing a superb job. As for evacuations, they did do well in telling HPD & HFD to go door to door, especially in the Noni Farms and Kapoho areas.

Leilani residents did get the extra deluxe treatment though with parking tickets given out in their own neighborhood, a curfew instituted, restrictions on peaceably assembling, and citations threatened for daring to use their own private roads and property. Three out of four jack-boots.

As for Rainbow Falls, it should be reopening today along with other State Lands according to DNLR (although County may not have gotten the memo). They must have followed Obie's advice and sent someone down along the cliffs to make sure the viewing area was completely stable and there is 100% no risk to anyone, anytime, ever.
