I've lost patience with people who lie about the TMT or the observatories on Mauna Kea, and snorkle did just that. Sorry you don't like harsh words, but if snorkle is telling his or her students the same thing as she is doing here, then it needs to be called out because it's untrue. I don't believe in amnesty for lies and am fed up with people dissing observatory staff for all the work they put into outreach and education - work they are not paid for.

Yes, it’s possible snorkle is a substitute teacher, or perhaps teaches in a non STEM classroom such as English or Social Studies, so he may not have read the newspaper or Punaweb when the Akamai Internships and other programs were announced. He may even be an air rifle instructor preparing his students for possible college scholarships mentioned in another thread, where they may later pursue their interests in the military, or another aspect of their practice, something they’ve been aiming at for all those years, a job as a retail associate at Target. Bullseye.

Dang, I stay gone a few days and you guys are talking about me.....

I'm a full time STEM teacher. Science doesn't care what you guys think, but there is more to this issue than just science. Cultural and environmental considerations are important as well. I have a large percentage of Kanaka Maoli students, and when considering all the issues they, for the most part, don't support any more observatories on Mauna Kea.

My STEM classrooms haven't received any grants from the observatories, but have gotten funding from a Governers Grant, our own grant writing; and whatever meager monies we can squeeze out of the DOE (who are Public Charter School biased).

I also wonder what percentage of this money goes towards the administering of them, and why they seem to favor regular DOE schools.

Anyway; I can tell you straight outa the classroom, that these kids are much more in tune today with Cultural, environmental, and progressive policies than most of the geezers in Hawaii. I sense a change is going to come.
