* People who collect Social Security
* People who receive medical treatment through Medicare
* The fire department
* The police department
* Hawaii Volcanoes National Park
* Hilo International Airport
* etc, etc, etc

It’s simply because the old socialism has become an acceptable part of everyday life, even for people who claim they are against socialism, that opinion shows on TV have to trot out new, younger boogeyman (and boogeywomen) to whip up emotional fear.

Many of the socialist institutions and public programs in Puna began as “Socialist attacks on America!” then after they were passed into law and accepted into society they became “civil services.” There was quite a battle over schools when Big Government wanted to take over the education of our youth from the churches.

Let’s face it, we’re surrounded by forms of socialism everywhere we go in East Hawaii. Today, right now. It’s not going to suddenly show up on your doorstep in the form of a young, newly elected congresswoman portrayed on an opinion channel as a boogeywoman so they can sell more survivalist food in vacuum packed cans, and bars of gold. Socialism is already on your doorstep, and has been for as long as you’ve lived in your house. Look closely, it’s probably in your house, under a name you find more pleasant and acceptable to your belief system.

All the kids want is a habitable Earth in their future. They’re not asking for the Moon. Or Mars.
