Correct: they "serve and protect" their own, and their pensions.

If it was average person they would be named. This county bring people in all the time and tell their name and then lets them go without pressing charges .

They have NO obligation to "serve and protect" They are not there for your benefit or safety. The quicker you figure that out the safer you will be.

The arrest of Deputy Scot Peterson for dereliction of duty seems to directly contradict this. Did he have an obligation to protect the students even if it meant putting his own life at risk?

Law Enforcement Code of Ethics

AS A LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICER, my fundamental duty is to serve mankind; to safeguard lives and property; to protect the innocent against deception, the weak against oppression or intimidation, and the peaceful against violence or disorder; and to respect the Constitutional rights of all men to liberty, equality and justice....

The charges against Scot are a result of public outrage. at the end of the day the charges will be dropped because SCOTUS has already ruled. A peace officer can at their obligation follow a code of conduct.
The primary function of any peace officer as an employee of the state (or govt entity) is to issue citations and generate revenue. They are trained to look at every citizen as a potential criminal in said process of generating revenue.

Before 2005 I would have agreed with any of you that "the boys in blue" are there for you, but that is no longer the case. When the SHTF, dont expect the police to protect you and yours. they are under no obligation legally to do so.

I guess cowardice by LEOs is not a crime.

Not often a person is accused of cowardice as bad as this guy is. Snuck away from a shooting in progress he was supposed to respond to. Even if he escapes judgment, he's a pariah.
