This link may be of interest to some of you.
I must confess, some of it is way over my head but I did find their site helpful .

And yes, Wuhan does have a virus research lab (level 4) within approx. 20 miles of the market (suspected site of the first case).

ironyak ranted:

"Sigh... No, what I objected to was YOU demanding that YOU be told who said something so YOU could judge whether they were qualified enough to have an idea, an idea about which YOU couldn't be bothered to read the links given even though doing so would provide the answer YOU so cared about. However, YOU know what this thread also is not about: YOU"

When I asked the question there were no links. You also put words into my mouth, e.g.,

"Wait, you're the one saying that the source makes all the difference, which is the logical fallacy."

I didn't say what you claimed I did. That's putting words into another persons mouth. All I was asking for is the source of the information, which is completely reasonable and definitely the first step in any investigation. For some reason you flamed me about that and now try to claim it's all about me, and then you write:

"It may be worth noting that this is an Opinion piece and that study regarding the suppression of info on WeChat is neither directly named nor linked to. Some might say Fake News, but it's not even purporting to be news. Be nice to know their sources!"

Wow. I wonder why you would like to know their sources? Maybe it's because you want to know where the information is coming from?

Saw a big Chinese dude in Target coughing into his facemask, on his way to toss a big wad of used tissues into the trash. It was kind of a surreal moment.

It makes a big difference if a story comes from the Washington Post or the Washington Times. Of course the source matters. Truth isn't just what you wish it to be.
If more people grasped that simple concept we could avoid wasting a lot of time worrying about nothing.

The discovery here that this was a virus manufactured by the Chinese government and then released on purpose hasn't made it to the New York Times yet, must be censorship by the elites?

The big tech companies are trying to "self regulate" harmful fake news on their platforms before they are held liable for something and forced to actually hire more human moderators. In the olden days, for a news outlet, we'd call that journalistic standards. Today, though, public trust no longer exists and we are offended by the very notion of someone else choosing which stories have merit.

It turns out a lot of people need help understanding what meets a standard of proof and what doesn't. Not everyone understands the rumor mill for what it is. The Mauna Kea military lasers are powered by a nuclear reactor that pollutes our acquifers, and all major news outlets are censoring the news.

TomK - I'm not going to keep crossing threads with you about this. If you want to talk about Mauna Loa, and what everyone said, it's right here, with links to the ideas, its author, and published information.

"TomK - I wonder why you would like to know their sources?

Because the article noted a unnamed study and summarized the results. There is lots of info about how WeChat censors its users, but I can't find that specific study. There is world of difference claiming a published study reached some conclusion compared to saying I once had a chat with a scientist who had this idea (which turns out was later published in a journal and could be talked about if you cared about it more than grinding yet another ax)

As to THIS topic, those interested probably saw the "uncanny HIV similarity" paper has been formally retracted. Neat to see the peer-review process happening on the fly, although the fear factor spreads faster than the fact-checkers.

HTH noted that tourism from China is only about 1% of the market here. So that direct economic impact is minimal, although the perceived threat of flying, face-masks, and foreigners will likely take its toll.

PaulW - It makes a big difference if a story comes from the Washington Post or the Washington Times.

Yet some of the time the Post gets things wrong and the Times gets things right. There is no logical justification to believe that simply because an authoritative source says something, it must be true (or that truths can only come from authoritative sources). Gotta exercise those analytical skills and spot the questionable evidence and reasoning (spending time on social media like Reddit and PW is great practice Smile

The Washington Post is owned by Jeff Bezos (Amazon), the richest man in the world, literally the definition of "the elite". It was rumored he made the purchase to "guide" public perception of whether or not Amazon is a monopoly. Or anything else he wants, I imagine. Most of the stuff he makes money on comes from China. But I'm sure that doesn't affect their journalistic credibility.

In other news, the science article that showed HIV "edits" in the virus has been retracted.

ETA: stuff from China

journalistic integrity has become, much like the term "political courage", an oxymoron...
