Reality is that the roads we have are just barely adequate under normal circumstances; everything comes to a halt if there's one serious accident.
Meanwhile, Puna continues to grow.
Shipman will lie down on the road for an alternate route.
If Shipman demands that no additional infrastructure be built, then give them exactly what they want: no more lanes to Hilo from Keaau, no traffic signal at Shipman Business Park. While we're at it, rescind the Keaau rezoning -- we don't have enough roads for today's population, so it would be foolish to add to the problem by building more homes.

If only we had some kind of "alternate route"...
OMG we so, so SO need alternate roads!! That was ridiculous this morning. My half hour ride to work out of Hawaiian Acres took almost 2 hours.

Wow that seems like a harsh option for someone who loves this place. I don't want to leave. Seems a little rude even, bluesboy. Like Kalakoa said, is that too much to push for? Making ripples about an issue that affects practically all of Puna?
For the amount of people down here the single route road option isn't adequate. While leaving the acres I saw diesel delivery trucks struggling to navigate the narrow 8 road. Unable to make the initial turn towards 8 after coming off Kuauli road because the Hawaiian acre roads are too narrow. There are no shoulders. The road was closed in both directions so all the morning deliveries had to come through the opposite direction of the miles long bumper to bumper mess of cars.
Hawaiian Acres and Orchidland roads aren't sufficient as an emergency alternate route!
I saw several vehicles pull off onto peoples driveways because their car broke down, radiator steaming from overheating.
There were also secondary accidents on 8 road. The emergency vehicles coming through took forever too because there are practically no shoulders for people to pull over and let them pass. A real gagglef*ck of a situation that should be addressed.

People moved to Puna for the cheap land and low taxes, and therefore waived any right to reasonable infrastructure. "Buyer to perform own due diligence," right?

I hate to says but when you people move out there you knew how the roads where. I f you want freeways everywhere maybe you should move back to where you came from.

Your property and fuel taxes are going to Hilo roads, so the county and HACA are proposing to tax us in HA some more so we can provide a nicer emergency route.
