Wuhan Corona Virus Coming Soon? (Now Here)
From The NY Times Tuesday evening briefing:

2. Americans may soon be advised to wear a mask, even if they feel healthy, to prevent transmission of the coronavirus.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is revisiting its guidelines after new data showed high transmission rates from people who are infected but initially show no symptoms. Under the agency’s current guidance, only the sick need to wear masks.

But there are concerns that changing the recommendations could lead to even worse shortages of medical masks for health care workers.

So, if I understand correctly, it’s OK (or very soon will be) to buy and wear a face mask. (Suggestion for the Punaweb mask discussion club - drop your stick, and back away from the dead horse) Also, the supply is such that there may still be shortages for medical personnel. (Suggestion, buy a non-medical mask, recommended for your use, and stay-at-home which will reduce your need for a mask)

Wear a mask? Don’t wear a mask? Believe what the cdc recommends?

The cdc has changed their recommendations regularly. Have they ever heard of asymptomatic carriers? Guess not since they recommended only wearing while you’re “sick”....

Yet most all medical professionals have taught us repeatedly about asymptomatic carriers, even referred to by some as “super spreaders”. People who are sick and not showing symptoms.

Hmmmm, lets give that some thought. Only wear a mask when you’re sick. Some people are sick but have no symptoms and are infectious. Conclusion based on those facts by the cdc? Don’t wear a mask unless you’re sick. LOL LOL LOL

If you have a mask, wear it in public.

Only an idiot, or someone who lives under a rock recommends NOT wearing one right now. I won’t mention any names.

If not a lie, it was a massive failure of imagination on the part of the CDC that people couldn't find something to cover their mouth with besides N95's. And it's not as if hospitals are buying 5-packs off of Amazon like you and me (if we could). Completely separate distribution channels, and not related to the 100k masks your local hospital *didn't* order months ago.

A member of my family is a nurse, and her office (outpatient type stuff) currently does not allow her to wear any masks when working with patients, or make patients wear masks. Even though any one of them could be asymptomatic, even though she could the unwittingly catch and spread the virus to vulnerable patients. She even offered to bring her own mask, and they told her it would lead to other nurses wanting and "wasting" masks. Their justification? "CDC guidelines". She is very upset, but cannot afford to lose her job.

Almost as if the guidance was changing to match profitability. It's not like the scientific principles underlying disease outbreak management are different than they were a month ago. We were supposed to have strategic reserves, too, where did that money go?

"Lieutenant Governor Josh Green is a doctor and the Hawaii COVID-19 Healthcare Liaison. He said not all mask are created equal, but something is still better than nothing.

“It depends which mask you’re using… If you’re using an N99 or an N95 mask, those take out 99 percent or 95 percent of the particles…those are very effective.”

But Green explained that not all masks provide that level of protection and N95 masks should be used by those who need them most especially since they are so hard to find.

“Those are really reserved for hospital use. They will protect you but we have to make sure that health care providers like nurses are using them so that they don’t have any transmission to spread to other patients.”

Green explained that not all mask provide that level of protection as he grabbed a simple, colorful cotton, ear loop mask similar in style to a surgical mask and put it on.

“This is a mask if you want to be hip and cool… its kind of nice cause it gives you a warm vibe and feelings but it might not actually protect you from anything much. But it is better than nothing.”

He said that he thinks everyone should wear a mask."

"The first employee of the Queen’s Medical Center has tested positive for the coronavirus.

“The Queens Health Systems is working closely with state health officials after receiving notification of a positive COVID-19 test result for one of its caregivers,” said spokesman Cedric Yamanaka.

Due to privacy concerns, Queen’s wouldn’t provide additional information about the staff member, but said the individual is “managing symptoms under self-isolation at home.”
