We love Lemon Grass in Kea'au shopping center; they just remodeled and I am sad to say it is worse than before!! How can you do that? But the food is great.

Brought this forward in my trek to find out what exactly some of the local stuff is...LOL! Went to Cafe 100, which I love...and I noticed that other "Drive Ins" have just as huge a menu...not anything like the mainland drive-ins...

Okay, I THOUGHT Saimin was noodles...ordered some - it's noodles IN BROTH. Just wanted some noodles heaped on a plate with maybe some spam or meat or something...

Also - what's BENTO? And if you wanna tell me what some of the other stuff is - I think I get it about LOCO's...my arteries screamed a little at the word LOL!

Bento = Box Lunch
Here's more than you want to know:

I liked Hiros in Hilo. I think it's in the the KTA plaza off Painako St and Kanoelehua Ave. My all time favorite was Lucy's Okazuya a little ways past the 7-11 or whatever it is on Kaumana Dr.

A neighbor told us about Cafe 100. We got the Teri Mix chick/beef with rice & potato mac...went to sit by the bay and eat it...that was the day that Mauna Kea was clear - not a cloud on it. Anyway the food was great!

I also cast my vote for"Lemon Grass", in Kea'au. You said Asian food right? They have a mix of chinese/Thai,and they don't charge an arm and a leg either. Very,very reasonable in price..

Well I guess what I am asking is what some of the stuff actually is...Saimin, Bento, Loco, other stuff too...there's a lot on that menu and I don't have a clue...I mean of course, I KNOW what Saimin is 'cause I ordered it LOL...but what do I order when I just want noodles and some meat mixed in? Is there a name for that? Big Grin

I don't wanna order something just to find out if I like it...and then don't.

Carrie, Bento is a boxed lunch, usually rice & one or two meats, ie. spam & Katsu (fried, usually served with a mildly spicy BBQ dipping sauce) Chicken, some bentos have egg, some fried noodles, just ask. Loco is a bowl of rice with scambled (usually)egg a meat on top, smothered with gravy. Saimen (for those reading that don't know) are raimen (boiled curly) noodles, can come with meat, some places serve with a little veggies too. Plate lunch or meals usually have 2 scoops of rice & 1 scoop mac salad (potato salads are not common here because potatos used to be limited here and very expensive, hence the abundance of macaroni salads).
Enjoy!
