they didn't have Hawaii permitting issues.

When I worked on Maui decades ago installing fire systems at restaurants, I overheard some bigwigs discussing delays with a McDonald’s opening.  One suggested they offer “courtesy coupons” to the appropriate people.  The restaurant was open the next week.  I don’t think the “coupons” were for milkshakes.

The coupons were only redeemable at the "hostess bar".

The new Malama opens tomorrow. Judging from the FB comments people are going to be lined up to get in.

Why, their prices were already higher than any place else, now add rent for the new mall

I'm probably dreaming, but I'm hoping "economies of scale" will allow for some relief in their prices. But I hear what you are saying as I generally have to shop somewhere more affordable. Like the 'Natch, you either have to be poor or wealthy to shop there.

I am a hard core shopper.
I'll spend a $100 worth of time hunting to save $0.05 on a purchase price.
But, one thing I learned a very long time ago making purchases in Alaska bush village stores.
If you don't like the price, then walk to town and get it.
The same thing applies here, except I say walk to Los Angeles if you don't like it.

This time, I can no longer participate in the primary.

I've always liked Malama, except for the long checkout lines. Their produce is fresh, people that work there are kind and friendly. And I like shopping at locally owned stores. Besides, there are few things in life more exciting than the opening of ANY brand new grocery store. I know. Get a life.
Certainty will be the death of us.

A tall, intricate wooden ceiling welcomes customers to the store, which will have a hot food counter, an expanded deli lineup, a full-service bakery and an Anytime Bar, which will serve juices, smoothies, tea, coffee as well as wine, cocktails, beer and kombucha.

I note the subjunctive form as regards anything except groceries. Perhaps the store isn't really finished?

Obligatory: "apparently made of wood, so not really investment quality". Just like the rest of Puna Kai.

In an interesting combination of paradox and irony, they probably are internally justifying their likely continuation of ghetto pricing as necessary to support the new upscale amenities.

Lots of businesses have soft openings.
Do they have toilet paper on the shelves?  Hand sanitizer, etc?  Then they probably have more essential items in stock than many established businesses had in their stores a year ago.
