It's based on average distance coughing and sneezing can spread the virus.  Yes, it can be farther.  But it's a number we work with.
Arbitrary numbers. Creates a false sense of security and is killing businesses.
I'm convinced that the Covid virus doesn't care at all what any of you think.

When you enter a restaurant you wear a mask until seated.  Restaurants are operating at reduced capacity, so not every table is filled, generally you are 6-10 feet away from anyone else not in your group.
If they dropped the mandates and diners sat 2 feet apart like in pre-COVID times, then what you said about inconsistent mandates would make sense.
Reduced capacity is meaningless in an enclosed room where your breathing each others air...
Meaningless?  Surely you recognize that the fewer people in a room, the less chances one or more are a carrier. And, if there is a carrier or carriers, the fewer people will potentially be exposed.

Also, the further apart you are from Covid Calvin, the less likely you will either be infected or if infected acquire a high viral load.
These aspects seem fairly obvious.  Are these restrictions intended to make it impossible for viral spread?  Of course not!

And by such logic, why would they shut down the parks and beaches where there is pretty much unlimited air and UV from the sun to sterilize everything? because its arbitrary and meaningless. But if it makes people feel safe in their daily activities.
" . . . why would they shut down the parks and beaches . . . "?

I was told by a county official that certain groups are well known to congregate elbow to elbow in the beach parks even when there is plenty of space to spread out. So, rather than enforcing the social distancing regulations while leaving the parks open, they just closed them. Of course they didn't really enforce the closure either, but he didn't want to talk about that.

Having said all that, I support continued mask wearing and distancing regulations indoors. Have you looked at the stats on number of infections lately? For the past month, the Big Island with about 20% of Oahu's population has been averaging close to 40% of their number of infections. We are either testing a higher proportion of folks than Oahu, which I doubt, or we are not controlling the disease as well. Something doesn't add up.

Yes, I agree that this was (is?) a very poor plan of action.  In hindsight, pretty much everyone agrees that "lockdowns" were a mistake.  The only lockdowns that really work are far too restrictive for Americans to stomach. And then, they only work temporarily.

Regarding Island Naturals, I asked the door guard at the Hilo branch today when outside dining would return.  He was fairly dismissive, scoffing "at least six months".  Rolleyes
The pre-announcement we've all been waiting for.

Emergency to be extended; restrictions to be adjusted; Safe Travels to become permanent. Ige believes his emergency management to be right and good.
